In the Maker Shed: Stirling Engine Kit

Education

This great-looking Stirling Engine Kit, from the Maker Shed, is as majestic as a piece of art and it’ll help you understand the basics of thermodynamics. Unlike internal combustion engines, Stirling engines run on an external heat source, which can be anything from combustible fuels to geothermal or solar energy! You can try 3 different experiments: the generator, the fan, and the car. The kit includes a display stand so you can show it off as the world’s coolest desk toy after you finish the experiments.

uh, what is the battery pack and electric motor for?

That’s a good question.  It’s not in the kit (instructions, at least) from what I can tell.  If I had to guess, I’d say they were tying to use it to jump-start it hands-free.

Near the bottom of the story it says it can be used for three different experiments: the GENERATOR, the fan, and the car. Maybe hes charging the batteries?

Launched originally as a source for back issues of MAKE Magazine, the Maker Shed expanded rapidly to meet the demand for 'projects in a box,' otherwise known as kits. Now we have a little bit of everything for makers, crafters, and budding scientists, from Arduinos to sock monkeys to chemistry sets .
