New in the Maker Shed: Grow at Home Mushroom Garden

This new Grow at Home Mushroom Garden is a bit of a departure from items usually found in the Maker Shed. We’ve noticed a trend toward urban agriculture and sustainable living which are completely embodied by this ingenious garden in a box. The brilliant design allows anyone to grow gourmet mushrooms right from the recycled packaging it arrives in. The soil is made from spent coffee grounds that are being kept out of the urban waste stream (and no, they don’t make the mushrooms taste like coffee.) Simply open the kit, slice open the lining, place it in front of a window, and  spritz it with water (spritzer included) a couple times a day. In as few as 10 days you’ll be able to harvest your first batch of delicious oyster mushrooms. Each kit yields up to 1 1/2 pounds of flavorful fungi in at least 2 crops (but as many as 4.)  We love this kit. We think you will too!

Features

  • Grow up to 1 1/2 lbs of tasty pearl oyster mushrooms
  • Multiple crops (at least 2, though some have got up to 4!)
  • Grow your first crop in as little as 10 days!
  • Just 3 Easy Steps – Open, Mist, and Harvest (spray mister included).
  • All indoors – just set on a kitchen window sill and mist twice a day (mister included)
  • The soil inside is 100% recycled coffee grounds – safe & sustainable
  • 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed

The Western Nations with highest unemployment ever, will now have time to lay back and actually grow mushrooms at home. imagine that! As the U.S., fiat, “Funny Money” suffers a “controlled demolition” by the powers that be, North Americans will have to return to their agricultural roots and till the soil, not for great expanses of golfing green, but for the very sustenance that would keep them alive. Rotor-tillers will replace lawn mowers, and garden tools, the golf clubs. Home made wines and beers, root-beers, sassafras and and ginger beers, even rhubarb and dandelion wines will move in where foreign delights once ruled. Burn this neat information about mushrooms to disc, just in case the illusion dies with the money, and the environmentalist nut jobs were right, and we really are unsustainable and cannot compete with the new Pan Eurasian Empire, rising in the East, casting long dark shadows over the U.S. economy, the U.S. nation, the American Dream.

Tried one of these out several months ago and was disappointed on multiple accounts.  The box claims to be shelf-stable, but ours began growing mushrooms spontaneously (and undesired at the time) without first being soaked (as instructions require) after spending a month in a dark dry closet.  The mushrooms grew from the top of the box, and came out stunted and inedible (maybe the moisture ran out as it wasn’t soaked as is necessary?).  After the first batch was removed, we soaked properly and followed the directions but managed to grow only a fruit fly colony and more inedible mushrooms.
This all would have been fine and forgivable as a packaging failure, but the company didn’t respond to emails or phone calls regarding our questions.  So much for 100% satisfaction guarantee.
