smallygoodhearth solar system tin Altoids Tin Learning Boxes
Laura, the blogger and educator behind Smallgood Hearth, is doing some pretty fantastic things with empty Altoids tins. The latest additions to her altered Altoids tins project include a mini solar system and a disabilities awareness tin. The solar system box comes complete with a mnemonic device for remembering the order of the planets and a fact card for each. She is still finishing up the disabilities awareness tin, but, when it’s done, it will feature seed bead braille, an example of a color blindness test made out of fusible beads, a mirror with information on lip reading, and some sign language cards. (In her post, she indicates that her tins can’t be all-inclusive, but they’re a great tool for starting conversations.)
When I was younger, I loved mini kits and fact boxes, so I think Altoids tins are the perfect place to stash little bits of knowledge in places where kids can discover and interact with them. What a great upcycling idea!
