Boats Recycled into Sheds

The fishing community on the English tidal island of Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, has found a wonderful channel of employment for their once seaworthy vessels. By simply turning them upside down and adding doors they are upcycled into sheds! So cool I wish they were converted into little studios instead. Photo by Kevin Wakelam. [via Teagan Tall]

This is my favourite place in the whole world and the place where my husband proposed to me.
I love these little sheds, but they’d only make good studios for small people as they’re quite low.

These remind me of the church I grew up in (a United Methodist church in central Kentucky)which had an interesting sanctuary ceiling designed to look like the shape of an upturned Viking ship. It was said early Viking converts to Christianity used to turn over the ships and turn them into churches, and the architect drew inspiration from that in designing the sanctuary. There is another church in my town with a similarly designed sanctuary ceiling. I don’t know if that style was particular to that architect, or if it was popular everywhere midcentury? Has anyone else seen a church sanctuary in this design? Sadly, the old church was torn down when they built the new, box-shaped church in the early 1990s (eek). The other church in my hometown that has a ceiling like that is a much smaller, Presbyterian church, built in the 1960s I think. Their myspace page has a pic of the ceiling, so you can see what I mean:

So magical!!! The bottoms (now the roofs) are so gorgeous. It’s amazing to think of all the time they spent in the water, and how they are now facing the sky.
