The New Terrarium by Tovah Martin
Terrariums are getting a new life these days and I am loving this new book, The New Terrarium: Creating Beautiful Displays for Plants and Nature by Tovah Martin. For those of us who are city and apartment dwellers, this is a great way to bring in a mini-garden into your home. The project ideas are endless in this book and there are a lot for those of us who don’t have a natural green thumb. I love the idea of collecting various ferns and plants and collecting them together into this decorative ecosystem. You’ll love all the inspirational photos and the various jars or cases you can use to create the terrarium you want. Spring’s coming soon and this is a perfect book to have in your gardening/craft collection.
Now, here’s your chance to get a FREE copy of The New Terrarium! We are giving away this book to 5 lucky CRAFT readers! Just leave a comment in this post and tell us why you need this book! Please make sure you include your email address in the comment form field (won’t be published). All comments will be closed by 10am Thursday, Feb 26. The lucky winners will be announced on Friday on the CRAFT blog. Good luck!

I would like this book because I live in the Gateway to the North (Edmonton, Canada), and it’s minus 30 out today, and we haven’t seen the sun in so long! I need a little something to cheer me up, and I think a cute terrarium would do it.

  2. Jenine Bressner says:

I need this book because I have been making glass plants, and I want to make terrarium dioramas with both real and glass plants. This book will help me learn how to do it!

  3. Cathleen G says:

I’d like a copy of this book because I am, alas, an apartment dweller missing my garden. A few terraniums would be just the thing to brighten up my new place!

  4. Katie Nickerson says:

I would love this book because I am just getting into gardening and it’s too cold to do anything outside yet! I started with some small succulents in my kitchen and and I have started some vegetable plants from seed, but this book looks like it will have great ideas for how to display plants in the home. Thanks for doing this giveaway!

  5. Liz says:

Hey, I’m in Canada, too! I think we could all use some green right now. I’ve spent the winter watching every green thing I bring into my apartment die, and I think I need a book to tell me what I’m doing wrong. Maybe a terrarium will be hardier than the spider plant that most recently shriveled up in my bedroom?

  6. Beth Walker says:

I need this book. NEED IT. I am a graduate student in biology and the only thing living in my office is a rat that eats my snack stash. I sure could use some (welcomed) life in there.

  7. Heather says:

I need this book so that I stop killing the plants I put into my terrarium attempts.

  8. Katie Nickerson says:

I would love this book!!! I need it because I am just getting into gardening and it’s too cold to do anything outside yet. I started with some small succulents in my kitchen and and I have started some vegetable plants from seed, but this book looks like it will have great ideas for how to display plants in the home. Right now my plants are in old bread pans and beer buckets. Ick. Thanks for doing this giveaway!

  9. megruth says:

I need this book. As a desert dweller in Las Vegas it’s incredibly difficult to grow anything that isn’t a desert plant. I would love to make a terrarium so I can make more tropical and water loving plants thrive!
    I’m already getting inspirations!

  10. Eva says:

I absolutely adore terrariums. Plus I kill just about any other plant- not much of a green thumb, so terrarium is the only way to go! Plus they are beeaautiful!!

I would love this book! I live in Vermont and the “growing bug” has bitten me. At the moment I’ve been repurposing Ben & Jerry’s pint containers, clemetine boxes, small clay pots and anything else I can find to start my garden. This book will certainly give me more eye-appealing ideas!
    Thank you,

I just moved into a new place and my dog decided that would be a good time to start eating plants! I started with terrariums and she leaves them alone, but I seem incapable of propagating anything but moss! I even have learn to make better terrariums on my 43things list. I need this book to bring some pet proof beauty to my world!!!!!! Let’s be honest, based on the cover, just flipping through it would be a good start!

  14. SaLad says:

i need this book because my husband is in love w. gardening and he’d be thrilled to be able to learn about these new terrariums!

  15. kaitlyn says:

I miss plants and and outdoors access year round. This would really brighten my Chicago winter.

  17. Mandi says:

I’d love to win a copy! I’ve had this book on my Amazon wishlist and it just looks SO lovely. Plus… two cats and plants? I’m thinking a covered terrarium is just the solution!

  18. eve says:

I’ve been collecting containers through the years for the sole purpose of creating terrariums, except I don’t know what to put into them. Now I’ve just got a collection of cool glass containers :-p

  19. Amy says:

I need this book because my house desperately needs green plants! And I will never make the effort without a kick in the pants – like a free book.

  20. eve says:

I’ve been collecting containers through the years specifically to create terrariums, except I don’t know what to put into them. Now I just have a nice collection of pretty glass containers :-p

  21. fuzzypeach says:

  22. Christian Anhalt says:

I really need this book because I always kill plants and I don’t have a green thumb… I have a brown one.

  23. Megan says:

I would love to have this book! I’ve wanted to get into making terrariums for a while. Like other people mentioned its a good solution when you have a cat who loves to chew on everything! I need some real green plants inside my house! :D

  24. Alex says:

It’s no secret that apartment living in New York can be a little cramped and lacking in natural beauty – my life is no exception. Add to that two cats who enjoy eats anything and everything green (and surprisingly, paper!), any plants we own are confined to the bedroom and, sadly, seem to find it hard to acclimate to “freezing” or “heat blast”. We have just started a terrarium, but haven’t yet seen any growth from our seeds. I would love a copy of this book for some guidance on the best plant-types, inspiration on cool containers and assistance with my not-so-green thumb.

  25. steffie says:

I live in Brooklyn, in a tiny apartment in a crowded neighborhood…. but I come from a much greener, much more beautiful space in the midwest. I have a few plants, but I would love to add much more– and terrariums add such a unique flair to greening up a room!

  26. frances says:

I need this book because I LOVE terrariums! I want to make abunch for my friend’s wedding!!!
    Mindyandlola@yahoo.com

  27. Siobhan says:

I would love this book! I am looking to increase the greenery within my home. I live in Southern California and while that sounds lovely, the price of real estate (although going down) is relegating me to townhome living indefinitely. I would love to beautify my space with this book and share it with my friends who are also not lucky enough to own a bit of land.

  28. Sassy Priscilla says:

Wow – this book looks great! I made my first terrarium last fall and it is doing great. I would love to be able to find ways to make more. Thanks for offering the chance.

  29. Lolly says:

I need this book so I can make terrariums and gaze into their green goodness to stave off the winter blues. Can we be done with the snow already?

  30. Rachel says:

Kind of a Victorian-chic thing? Reminds me of The Orchid Thief!

  31. ToilingAnt says:

I’d give this book to my mom, who loves to garden but whose mobility is limited. She would love to have growing things in the house with her!

  32. trapped says:

I am trapped behind the orange curtain and need a few beautiful displays of nature to brighten the concrete jungle of south orange county CA.

  33. HL says:

I think an hour in your garden (even if it’s a terrarium garden) is worth more than a psychiatrist appointment!

  34. Tanya says:

I would like to win a copy of this book so my nephew, who wants to be a botanist when he grows up, and I can make some projects together. He would FLIP for this book!

  35. Marie-Eve says:

I would like this book because I always wanted to live in the Amazon so now I could learn to grow the Amazon in a jar.

  36. Beth says:

My husband & I will be moving into a downtown house soon. This book will help us increase the “nature” around us, which would normally be surrounded by trains passing by, busy streets & the sight of tall buildings.

  37. Amanda says:

I love terrariums! Living in the great frozen north, it would be great to have a piece of spring/summer around all the time. Plus, plants are just beautiful and amazing. I’d love to get my orchid looking more like the one on the cover too!

  38. shala_beads says:

I need this book because I really wish I could keep green things living, and I need help. Really!

  39. Mindy says:

I live in a tiny shit-hole apartment directly under the el tracks in Chicago. We could really use some plant-life. Plus I remember how much I loved making terrariums out of soda bottles in school. I just might make one anyways.

  40. Kate says:

I’m dying for more plants in my apartment and am totally sick of philodendrons. This book would be so excellent!

  41. Kelly says:

I love plants. I’m not the best gardener, but there is something about having a live fresh plant around that makes things a little more cheerful. My problem is my cats. Cat like to eat my plants, so I haven’t been able to have any in the house for ages. A terrarium is something I never thought of to solve this problem. It would give me an opportunity to have live plants that are safe from kitty teeth. (: Meow.

  42. Whitney says:

I would love to win this book because I live in a dorm room. Living in a dorm makes it hard to decorate and things like that…but I would love to make some terrariums for my room so I can enjoy a little eco-system without it taking up much room. It also helps that terrariums don’t have to be watered much, in case I get to caught up in my homework and forget about watering it.

  43. radreader says:

    1. I have 47 glass jars in my carport waiting to be made into something.
    2. My MIL has a giant glass bottle in her foyer that is bigger than my toddler and she keeps saying that “one of these days” she’s going to make it into a terrarium. Now would be a good time for her since my FIL just left to work as a contractor in Iraq for a year.
    3. I teach a “Foundations of Art” class which calls for a wide variety of design strategie–with this as a resource my students could make more “living” art.
    4. I will review it on this blog (lj_user radreader) and on chandlerpritchett.blogspot.com.
    5. I used to work in a fish store and terrariums bring on wonderful bouts of nostalgia.
    my email is chandlerpritchett@gmail.com

  44. Sandy says:

I was just looking at this book on amazon. Would love to win a copy!

  45. Meryl says:

I tried to make a terrarium once and ended up growing only mold–clearly I need this book! :)

  46. Erin says:

I need this book because I was just getting ready to make a terrarium. I just moved into a place that has moss in the backyard after years of living in a desert climate and I need to bring it indoors, but I don’t just want to stick it in a jam jar, I want to do this beautiful plant justice because it represents a new chapter in my life and the more humid climate is the reason I packed up to a new, unfamiliar city.

  47. the daily dump. says:

I love collecting precious plant specimens, but so far my most creative display is an upcycled baby wipes container. Please show me a better way.
    starslikejoe@gmail.com

  48. Chelsea says:

I need this for my husband, he loves orchids but just can’t get them to live…

  49. Riley says:

See here’s the thing. I love plants with their green CO2-breathing sexy windswept leaves. Plants do not love me, they don’t tell me what they need, they just fade away. I try and I try. I put them in the sun. No, that’s not right. I water them. No, too much. I’m currently trying to persuade one melancholy Mother-in-Law’s tongue to stay. Please, baby, stay.
Much like a controlling girlfriend, by encapsulating my free-sprited paramours, they will HAVE to stay. I can stroke them and monitor their cell phone bills and snoop in their emails, if they are under glass. MY control. Muahhhhhaaaahhh.
    Plus, they’re just pretty.

  50. jennie says:

Well, NEED is a strong word but I would love to have this book because I have fond memories of terrariums of my childhood. Also, I have a rather naughty kitty who likes to chew on my plants and I want to stop that. And I often see interesting glass containers while out thrifting.

  51. Tiffany says:

My partner has fairly recently become slightly obsessed with these little terrariums and their cute factor. She talks about making them, sends me links to images of them, and all around inundates my inbox with the endless possibilities that terrariums possess. I would love to win a copy of The New Terrarium that I could share with my ladyfriend in hopes that it would encourage her to take her love of terrariums to the next level and actually make some for our apartment.

  52. Sarah H says:

Oooh….cool ideas that look like a lot of fun!

  53. aimee says:

I need this book because I have 3 cats who get into absolutely everything. If I could properly put together one of these terrariums I may actually be able to keep plants and have them live.

  54. Johanna I. says:

I’ve never really tried any sort of gardening but have been wanting to lately. These little controlled environments would be a perfect way to get started. And what a beautiful cover! Thanks for the chance to win!

  55. Sarah H says:

    Looks like some great ideas!
Would love to win that book!

  56. xephonia says:

  58. Erica says:

…what a brown thumb I have. I grew up in the woods – you’d think I could grow anything! My succulent is even clinging to it’s last breath! I want (more than anything) to create beautiful, forest-inspired arrangements so that I can keep my roots close to me (literally) while I live in the city.

  60. Sharon says:

I need this book because not only do I live in a very non-green area of town, but also – try as I might, my plants always die horrible deaths and not even by my own hands! Our nasty summer heatwaves constantly kill my plants, and our weird inconsistent winters confuse my plants into death no matter how hard I try to water them properly.

  61. moonrat42 says:

I need this book because I have a house full of small critters who like to mess up my plants, and many empty jars.

  62. Sophie Burrett says:

I made my first terrarium the other day – I was so proud, took lots of pictures and told people all about it. Now is has strange little white worms in it which scare me a little and I don’t know how to help them. Learning to make proper ones would be lovely!
I also brought some amazingly creepy little cat figures the other day, I think they are waiting for a Terrarium to live it *grin*

  63. Al says:

For months my fiance has been pouring over wedding blogs, and fell in love with the idea of terrariums as centerpieces. She loves anything being presented under glass. For weeks I’ve heard about different ways to make them work with our table settings. I just want to make her happy, and would love to be able to give her this book!

  64. rachel says:

Speaking of having no green thumb, I could kill a silk plant! I would love to have a terrarium project to start me on the looong road to actually learning how to, you know, keep plants alive.

  65. Caitlin says:

A few years ago I moved from my parents’ home (smack dab in the middle of a green, marshy wood) to a basement apartment in the financial/industrial distric of a large city. Add to that my totak inability to keep green growy things from turning brown and wilty and you have a sad situation. As much as I love my new home, I pine for a miniature version of the lush forest I grew up with!

  66. Loretta says:

I have been searching online for months now in order to gain some knowlege on succulents and terrariums. I love plants and would like to bring more into my small apartment. I love this website I have gotten so many good crafts from you.
    Thank you so much

  68. jen says:

i would love this book because i moved into a bigger place last year with tons of light, but still manage to have a bunch of raggedy looking plants. i’d love to be surrounded by interesting arrangements that i’ve built from the bottom up (so to speak) so i know how to take care of them properly.

  69. christine porter says:

I love terrariums and would love to win this cool book. Thanks!

  70. Jessica says:

The city just cut down the ONLY tree within view of my apartment, so I really need this book! I need some help to bring a little green to my life, even though I am a total black thumb…

  71. Elli says:

My husband builds and maintains vivariums in his spare time for our poison dart frogs. I love to see his passion when he works on them, and I’d love to share just a bit of that passion. Except instead of his rain forest environs, I want something to remind me of the mountains we miss so much. I love the elegance and simplicity of these little ecosystems. Terrariums are perfect for our little apartment and will certainly brighten up our life in a city that feels so suffocating and bleak.

  72. Kelli says:

I would truly love to have this book! I have three cats who make it impossible to keep plants around the house… and I’ve even got a green thumb! I think a terrarium would be the perfect solution to my kitty/plant problem!

  73. Colleen says:

I need this book because I have a few of these empty glass containers and I love the picture on the cover of this book! How inspiring!

  74. Jason says:

I love terrariums, but after many failed attempts at making one, I’ve given up hope. Maybe this book could help fix that problem!

  75. Jen Romo says:

OMG I need this book too!!!! I have been dying to make my own terrarium for several months and have yet to get started. I have a yardless apartment that needs some low maintenance greenery since I travel a lot for work.
Thanks for the chance to win Craft!!

  76. hhbrady says:

    Hello,
I need this book because it has an orchid on the cover so I know it’s a sign! I had to give away all 18 of my orchids (including some rare specimens) when my daughter was born–our spare room (now her bedroom) was my orchid space. Maybe I can find some ways in this book to take up the hobby again on a smaller scale. She is six now, and I still miss my orchids and their winter-time flowers. Winter lasts a long time here in northern Michigan (it was a blizzard in fact when I went out for lunch today).

  77. Catherine says:

I have no fancy reason other than I am living thing challenged…I have a tough time with plants and certainly could use tips for keeping them pretty and thriving.

  78. sylvan says:

i would love to win this book! i live in the very very dry high altitude west, and am enchanted by the magical humidity that must exist in terrariums. i recently saw an old terrarium book at a thrift store and needed the money in my change purse to take the bus. i want to transform my cute little studio apartment into a magical miniature indoor garden!

  79. hhbrady says:

I need this book because it has an orchid on the cover so I know it’s a sign! I had to give away all 18 of my orchids (some were rare) when my daughter was born, as she needed the space for her crib (our house is quite small). She is six now, and I still miss them. Especially on days like today in northern Michigan, there was a blizzard going on when I went out for lunch!

  80. JennyinAspinwall says:

I totally need this book. I am a stay at home mom with two little vandals that like to dig in my plants- the ones that I can safely have in the house, that is! It would be a great stress reliever for me (now that extreme cabin fever has set in), and an educational tool for the boys (they are 2 and 4). I am working with them now to start seeds, and it would be really cool to have something fun to show them as it changes. We have a yard that is the size of a postage stamp, with all the available space taken up with “running” space (gotta have it), so I totally make the most of my indoor space. I haven’t tried a terrarium yet, but I would love to!
I am also a rabid Freecycler/recycler/thrift store junkie, so I have plenty of material to work with. I promise promise promise that it will be put to good use! Thanks for helping us out with this great offer…

  81. ms. tea says:

i need this book because i found a gorgeous bell jar at an estate sale and it currently sits empty for lack of inspiration and knowhow!

I would like this book because I always wanted to live in the Amazon and now I could learn to build an Amazon in a jar.

  83. Joelle says:

I would LOVE to own this book. I constantly try to surround myself with plants but I seem to have a very black thumb. Using terrariums seems like a better way to accomplish what seems like a necessity in life.

  84. krista says:

i actually killed an aloe plant.
i would love a second chance at love.
i think the terrarium is a good start.
    :-)

  85. Sara says:

I need this book because I love african violets and many of their other relatives need a much higher humidity requirement than my house can provide!

  86. Marsha says:

I need this book because I’d dearly love to start a terrarium and have no clue how to go about it.

  87. Teri says:

I really need this book! My grandparents owned a very successful greenhouse business while I was growing up, and I often helped them with their planting, customers and other chores. Unfortunately, I don’t appear to have inherited their green thumbs! Grandma would be so proud to come to my home and see a beautiful display like those in the book. And, I could use a little taste of spring in my life, too! I cannot wait to get started!

  88. laura says:

I made a bunch of terrariums last year, and only the ones with my jade plants survived. Too much moisture? who can be sure? maybe this book will tell me!

  89. Sandra Pendle says:

I need this great book because i have a little Venus Flytrap that i have kept alive for over a year. I con’t know how much longer it can go on! I need to learn how to make it a nice little home of its own. Please help my Venus Flytrap.

  93. Catherine says:

Oh, how I would LOVE to win this book! I have been quietly admiring terrariums for quite some time and have been dreaming of making my own with the help of my toddler this spring. This book would be EXTREMELY helpful! Thanks for the great giveaway!

  94. Rebekah A. says:

I need this book because after 3 years of serving as a resident advisor at a university, I’m buying my own place for grad school and I would love to liven it up with some plant life. Alas, plants wilt in my wake as my black thumb is legendary among the flora. I need all the help I can get to not only create a beautiful greenspace in my new home but to keep it alive longer than a week!

  95. natana says:

I live in student housing with my family. That should say it all.

  96. Willawill says:

I last made a terrarium in the Girl Scouts when I was about 10 years old. It sat on the window sill of our dining room. I remember checking on it and gazing into it with such joy!
I think it’s about time to start again, and for that, I will clearly need this book.
    Thank you!!

  97. cdsedlar says:

I live in a small, rather dark apartment which creates a challenge when it comes to growing plants. I would love to try this!! I truly need this book for help in getting started!

  98. lowrahk says:

I have fond memories of searching for a 5 gallon glass water bottle with a 2 inch opening with my father when I was young. That was my first terrarium. I remember it had plastic dinosaurs from my collection nestled inside the ferns and bromeliads. I later worked in a garden shop and made a few terrariums, but they were single plants in cheap glass canisters. I would love to use some of the salvaged containers (pack rat!) I have, and this book, to upcycle some terrariums!!

  99. Marci says:

This looks like a wonderful book! My husband and I rent a house and can’t really plant as much as we’d like. I would love to learn more about terrariums because I think this is something we could definitely do! Thanks!

  100. sarahwarda says:

how do i love terrariums, let me count the ways….
i love hiking through our forest, searching for new and different mosses and tiny plants to make new homes for… i love scouring thrift stores, flea markets and antique shops for unique glass domes and jars…. i love to look at books with incredible photography, especially those relating to my hobbies…and i love to blog about the things i love.. check out my latest terrariums on my blog: http://www.playingelegant.blogspot.com I posted just for the occasion. I would love this book!!!!

  101. Jennifer says:

I absolutely need some help in greening my city apartment. Terrariums are so beautiful!

  102. Linzy says:

I would love to have this book!! I moved from Southern California to Tennessee and now am having to keep all my plants indoors, they are not used to the COLD or humid weather. I love the simplicity of terrariums and the way they can bring so much to a room without a lot of $$!

  103. shallowwater says:

I need this book so badly! My friend gave me one for Christmas, and I almost killed it somehow when it got all moldy! I just want a pretty jar of moss on my desk!

  104. Lisa says:

I’m an orchid lover so I’m drawn to the idea of a terrarium. They seem to be the only plants I’ve ever had that don’t die in my hands. I also have a couple tiny orchids that won’t grow up, they have been small for many years, so maybe they would be suited to a terrarium. Pick me!

  105. Mari Pierce says:

I would LOOOVVEE to have this book! I already have the glass container that I’ve been meaning to turn in to a terrarium and even made little sculpey mushrooms to accompany whatever plant I put in there, but I have no idea where to begin. this book would be perfect for me!

  106. kyredbutterfly says:

I want to grow plants and have green things around me. I really do. But even the simplist things I try to grow either die on me or my cats eat them. Sometimes these two are related, sometimes it’s just me. But I would love to use this book as a guide to create a wonderful living world that was also protected from kitties!

Well, I have a black thumb but I can still fake it and look like a pro with a pretty book like this one!

  108. JennyW says:

My husband is such a terrarium geek, and this would be the perfect gift for him. He loves to experiment with different plants and watch them grow. Please, pick me! =)

  109. Jessie B. says:

I made a terrarium about a year ago that lived happily for many months and then died. I need this book so I can learn to take care of terrariums for the long haul.

  110. Kristin A. says:

I was just researching ideas on adding plants to my office that aren’t high maintenance. Terraruims would be perfect!

  111. Dana Archip says:

    This book is my life!

  112. Paula says:

I never had a terrarium and know very little about gardening so this book would be perfect! Thanks!

  113. Jennifer says:

What a great book! I need a copy because my husband and I have been trying these with our kids, but he can’t seem to get out of 1977 when it comes to ideas. So my kids have become very uninspired. The 5 gallon fish tank just does not seem to cut it these days.

  114. Chris says:

I’m already acquiring a reputation of oddity at work for having real plants and real art (gasp!) in my cube. This would be a revival of both avenues at once.

  115. Tanna says:

I very much need this book as I am an apartment dweller in Juneau, Alaska. It’s hard enough to grow plants outdoors in the cold- so a clever book on indoor lovely plants would be immensely helpful.
I’d also like to know if there is a way to terrarium (is that a verb?) herbs? That would be so handy!

  116. Karen L. says:

I used to have a large terrarium many years ago but when I moved, I had to get rid of the large bottle. It’s been a long time since I tried this. Would love to put some smaller ones together that would fit in my house. We all need plants to help clean our “house air”.

  117. Amy Carpenter says:

    1. Late last fall I grabbed my boyfriend and dog and we went to the woods for sticks, stones, and moss; we bought giant bags of soil and clever glass jars from ikea, complete with lids. We even had a special table set up where I did magical measurements and sifting.
    2. We placed ceramic figurines of vintage women that were flown via ebay to their new homes of moisture and moss.
    3. I took some pictures and built little paths out of glass tiles.
    4. We watered.
    5. The fairies came.
    6. Everything was really nice for a while. Perfect. We’re talking cotton candy in a horticultural jar kind of pleasure here.
    7. The plants started to wilt. One died. Another dried.
    8. We tried to water correctly. Another lilted.
    9. The fairies noticed. They are considering leaving.
10 I have countless plants thriving at home but can’t seem to make these little magical worlds take…to really consider themselves permanent niches.
    11. I rarely give up. Just watered a two year old orchid in my room, hoping it will bloom up from it’s dry browned stump. Orchids can do that you know.
    12. So can fairies. Or so I’ve heard.
    Maybe Tovah discusses this?
If so I would be very grateful to pass along such wisdom in the form of care.
    Thanks,
    ~Amy

  118. Lynn says:

I’d love the book because I have a great green thumb outside, but inside it’s black as night!

  119. Aprilly says:

    My apartment is minimalist.
    Very minimalist.
As in, if we had this terrarium book, we could use it as a table.
Possibly a table to make terrariums on.
Although it might be difficult to read the instructions while designing plants on it.
I think you should give us a chance nevertheless.

  120. Joanne Arnett says:

I need this book because, like the exact right shade of red lipstick that’s always eluding me, once I get it angels will sing, a mini garden will grow, and my life will be perfect.

  121. Whiti says:

My collection of carnivorous plants will thank you…by being contained and not turning into man eaters!

  122. Emma says:

I asked for a nifty little terrarium for Christmas and unfortunately enough, didn’t receive one. :(
I need this book so that I can make one of my own and fill the little terrarium shaped void in my soul (and on my desk!)

  123. palmtreeprincess says:

it would be a great birthday present :D
But also, I really really want this book because I’ve always wanted to get into greening up my small spaces, but I just don’t know where to start. I come from the great outdoors of beautiful Vermont, but now I am stuck in New York living where I only have my bedroom to personalize. I would love the opportunity and inspiration to bring a little of the outdoor beauty into my room, and I know this book would give me the help I need!! Please pick me!!!

  124. melanie says:

Terrariums are so much fun! I think they are a great project to do with the kids. I really want to make one, but I need some ideas.

  125. Kendall says:

Pick me, because I really need to grow something and not have it die!

  126. Emily S says:

i’ve got 3 kittycats here at home and they eat every single plant that i bring home! I brought home a pot of primroses, and they ate all the blooms and left the foliage! A terrarium would definitely curtail their efforts :)

  127. missdk says:

Ooh ooh ooh! I want :)
I need this book because I love love love terrariums and succulents and plants all over my house. They give this wonderous look of a biosphere as you combine earthly beauty with exotic glassware.

  128. Mary says:

I was just thinking about signing up for a terrarium class and with this book, I could do it myself.

  129. Julie says:

I live in a small apartment in Tokyo. Terrariums are my only hope for bringing the outside in!

  130. kariko says:

I know the reason I need this book will not garner a lot of sympathy but it’s the awful truth. I was born and raised on a little tropical island surrounded by GREEN, living, plant life and I moved to desert area California where it’s mostly BROWN and dry and now we must move to the north east where I know the dark, bleary winters will be difficult for me to deal with so creating a little terrarium with some hint of my true home will bring me peace. thanks!

  131. Christine's Curiosity says:

Shortly before I departed my lovely Alma Mata, the University of Maine, I had the pleasure of spending a few minutes in the presence of the secretary of the Honors department. I was still in an awkward social stage and felt rather shy to speak up about things that I admired. But on that cold Maine winter day, within the walls of the aging Colvin Hall, there sat in the rare rays of sun ever seen on her desk, a quaint but beautiful terrarium. Speckles of condensation clung to the inner glass belying the cold beyond the window. The bitter and sweet greens of virulent moss climbed over river rocks within its sweet haven. This distinct, inspiring, peaceful memory is why I would like to attempt to reproduce that beautiful scene, and I know no better way than with Tovah Martin’s book. Thank you.

  132. Wix says:

I could use a terrarium or seven. My boyfriend and I share an “efficiency” (heinous misnomer) smaller than my college dorm room and we’ve tried and failed to fit normal-sized house plants into the apartment as well. But a landscape architect should have some plants around the home, so I’d make room for a tiny terrarium!

  133. lword says:

i definately need this book since i have been interested in terraniums since i was a child. i used to make them when i was little, but really don’t know anything about how they work or how you are actually supposed to make them. I have been looking for some new pretty plants for my apartment and making some of these would be great!

  134. Victor says:

I’m a fan of plants of course! Also, I’m heading to college soon and we all know how small and cold the dorms are.
Another reason? My birthday is coming up! The book is the perfect gift! :)

  135. Patti Manes says:

This is just the book for me. The one I have looked for and not found. The one I really need. I have a terrarium in an old glass chemistry gas collection jar (5 Gal.) and I need more ideas because I love that terrarium so much!. So, I neeeed that book. Please.

  136. plumpudding says:

Great! As we live in an apartment with no porch and no capacity for window boxes, this is just what we need to bring in some green!

  137. Laura says:

I would love to have this book, I think having a terrarium would work… I love plants but unfortunately so does my cat, she shreds any I bring inside.

  138. Brittany Daugs says:

    Hello,
I would love a copy of this book to add to my collection. I have recently begun an interest in terrariums, after I bought one for my college adviser as a thank you gift. I stumbled across a great terrarium seller on Etsy, and ever since my curiosity has increased.
I learned on a recent Craft blog post that a terrarium class is being taught at the Craft Kitchen in Santa Ana, and what better way to prepare than leafing through this book?
I have an interest in the “oddities” of nature, and I feel, somehow, that terrariums fit into this niche.
Thanks for considering my essay. My fingers are crossed.

  139. Sandy says:

Funny, I was just looking at this book on amazon. We live in upstate NY and I’d love to have some green around the house during the long winter months.

  140. Dana says:

I would LOVE to get my mitts on this book, and if I don’t win, I’m totally going to buy it! I would love to have a sideboard filled with terrariums, and can use all the help I can get!

  141. Alexa says:

I would love this book. I live in the desert & need to bring some green inside. My only attempt at a terrarium resulted in mold. I need help!

  142. Cassi says:

I would absolutely *love* to have this book! I have the fondest memories of making terrariums growing up – so fun to create a little miniature world! Where I live now we have very long winters and it would be so nice to have a variety of terrariums so I can remember what green plants look like! We also have many little roving critters that love to chew on plants so it would be a perfect way to keep them from being eaten! Please please pick me!!

  143. Julie says:

I’ve always lived in an apartment or condo, so I don’t have a clue when it comes to gardening. I’m great at arranging cut flowers, but I have no idea how to keep potted plants alive! I received a Bromeliad plant as a Christmas gift, and it’s barely hanging on! Compared to my sister’s Bromeliad, my plant definitely does not look as glossy, green, or vibrant as hers. I don’t know what to do!
I would love to have flowers or some greenery to cheer up my place. For the love of plants, I really need the help! Thanks!

  144. Satilopi Saretuat says:

My cat Badger will SYSTEMATICALLY BINGE on any houseplant, cut flower, or leafy green vegetable that I bring into the apartment. After which, naturally, she regurgitates onto whatever looks most difficult to clean: a stack of CDs, perhaps, or a box full of loose papers.
So obviously this book is exactly what I need to satisfy my lust for indoor gardening while keeping my darling kitty out of trouble!

  145. Brittney says:

This book looks beautiful. I need it because I am a failure when it comes to keeping plants alive, and I feel like a terrarium might be a better method for me.

  146. Cassi says:

  147. librarycat513 says:

I need this book because I love plants and have been fascinated with terrariums since I was a kid and we made them from soda bottles in class. Also, I have cats and that makes it hard to keep plants in the house because there’s no place to put them that the cats can’t get them for a “quick snack”. Terrariums would mean that I could have more plants with less snackage.

  148. holly says:

Because terrariums are cool! That’s why! Thanks for the give away!

  149. Fanny says:

I would love to bring some beautiful plant life into my boring home.

  150. Gelsey says:

I would love to have this book because who wouldn’t want to make their very own world under glass?

  151. star says:

this book looks PERFECT!! i really need this book. i live in an apartment so i don’t have a yard or a garden. AND on top of that, i have a cat who destroys any hanging plants i attempt to keep. so a terrarium would be perfect. keep that naughty kitty out! :)

There is nothing cuter / sweeter than a little green under a glass jar! I love these but have no idea how to do them. I would for sure thrown in a teeny tiny gnome and some plump little toadstools.

  153. Karen says:

What a beautiful book. Thank you for the inspiration.
    Karen

  154. Bladerunner says:

I need this book! I recently bought a tiny house. So tiny that I have mostly tall furniture just so I can have shelving. I don’t have hardly any low horizontal surfaces. And I have cats. Who eat plants. On a regular basis. Terrariums will at least present a challenge, on the few surfaces I have suitable for plants. Plus, my little house gets really cold in fall, winter and early spring, which isn’t terribly good for most little plants. Terrariums will help keep the little plants a bit warmer.

  155. jami fowler says:

we have a very tiny apartment and it has been a very long winter (with ice storms-I live in Kentucky)! Plus, i would love to learn a new craft, as the only plant I’ve ever had was a little cactus!

  156. Norma says:

It would spark ideas and give me how-to’s. I have made three terreriums in the last month and I am totally hooked! Making terrariums is a wonderful way of creating!!How great is the cover alone!!!!!!!!!

  157. brooke says:

I am the owner of two very evil cats and have been pondering the creation of several terrariums for some time. This would solve my cats dig up any plant I bring home problem & make my husband very happy. He likes plants!

  158. Erin says:

I would love to use this book to find ideas to how to bring life to my horribly boring cubicle.

  159. Sarah says:

I live in a small apartment in the Northeast and I usually go to the Flower Show this time of year to get an early dose of spring but it is cancelled! I would love to bring a piece to my house.

  160. andrea from the fishbowl says:

    What a gorgeous book!
I have been tinkering with terrariums and haven’t quite got the hang of it yet. I need all the help I can get! I love the idea of adding more green to my home.

  161. Aisling says:

Yes, the whole exclamation-one thing is more than dead, but I’m bringing it back to try and express just how gleeful I am with the prospect of this book.
I’m an apartment dweller now, after living in a house with a yard for 20+ years. I don’t have a balcony and my landlord refuses to allow window boxes. Indoor potted plants by the window a) mess with my view and b) never do all that well. But I have a desperate green thumb that needs attention! I’ve been thinking of getting into terrariums – you can tell by all my miniture searches on etsy, hah – but owning this would def shove me in the right direction.
    Fingers crossed!

  162. Ninjanator says:

Ah, I need to spice up my room a bit more (it’s a bit drab and empty atm) so this book would definitely be a good way to get some inspiration :)

  163. tianacaona says:

I cannot have plants. My husband and I have two rambunctious cats. When we got them, I had several plants around our apartment. One was in a long, rectangular window box near our stairs. Every day I would find leaves in the hallway from this plant. Why? Because my cats liked to sit in the pot! They have gnawed on every plant that was in our apartment and, alas, there are no more. I need this book because it means I may be able to keep plants in the house again!

  164. Literature Goddess says:

My SO will be starting his educator career by teaching Life Sciences next year and I would love to be able to add some color to his classroom.

    thanks!

  166. moondogdesigns says:

  168. carrie says:

I have 3 orchids that aren’t exactly flourishing – I think a terrarium is just what they need!!

  169. Regina says:

I would really love a copy of this because,
    1. I’ve been waiting since Dec for it to come out.
    2. My house needs terrariums.
    3. It would be a great process to share with my boys.
    4. Terrariums are beautiful!
    Thanks for this great opportunity!

  172. Kecia says:

I need this book because while I love green and growing things, so do my cats and my toddler. Maybe if I could capture my efforts under glass, I could bring a bit of my garden inside – without everyone trying to take a few bites of it!

  173. Victoria says:

I would love to own this books! I’ve loved terrariums ever since I built one out of a soda pop bottle in elementary school. Now, as a student, a terrarium would be a great way to bring a little bit of the outdoors inside!

  174. Veronica says:

    Oh what a neat idea!!

  175. Jennifer says:

I need this book because I live in the desert, and I forget to water. green is good.

  176. Tracy says:

The only way a plant can survive in my house, is if it’s safe under glass…
I’m crossing my not-so-green thumbs that I win a book!

  177. Emma says:

Winning this book would awesome. Why do I need this book? Because terrariums are wonderful, my mother has a black thumb (much to her disappointment, my grandmother can’t spend as much time in the garden as she used to, and I would love to give this to one of them as a gift.

  183. Yasemin Kırbaş says:

Do you remember the movie “Great Expectations” with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke? Do you remember the overgrown garden there? It was so lovely.
I want this garden right in my living room in order to feel the magical romance of being in such a garden. Terrarium will help me with it.
Also, Plants look like very precious jewellery in those glasses. They are in the right place they deserve

  184. ginauten says:

My three kids (ages 9, 5 and 4) and my husband and I love to create terrariums. We love to throw beans, and seeds and acorns (anything that will sprout) into a glass jar and then everyone in the family has to predict which will grow first second, third, etc. We then keep a journal handy to record when each item first sprouted, and how long it lived, and if anything exceptional happened like little worms coming out of the acorns! The kids love to check in on the mini gardens everyday when they come home from school. We also have a moss collection from beaches and mountains that we have visited. This book looks like it would be the perfect inspiration for my young indoor gardeners.

  185. Ellie says:

This book would be used by my family! We enjoy plants and gardens, and living in an area where the growing season is shorter, this would be a wat to have a “world” inside. Plus, my cat couldn’t chew them up- though it might be the equivalent of tempting “pheasant under glass.”

She’s such a wonderful friend and I’d love to be able to give her a special gift that appeals to her green thumb.

I wish I could earn it! I need it because I bought a beautiful glass wine and I’ve been thinking in making a terrarium out of it :) I know it’ll look beautiful!

  216. Sarah says:

What a beautiful book! We have a nice container for a terrarium but I haven’t known what exactly to do with it. Pick me!

Wow — what sugar rush of some of my life’s best memories! My aunt Eleanor (who was a doctor) always planned or found fun and creative things to do with me and my sister, when we were little children in the 1970s — like making dolls from corn husks, or sticking cloves into apples for pomanders. So I recall many happy hours spent with her, creating terraria from moss and little plants that we’d gather from the land around her house in upstate New York.
I’d love to use this book to help introduce my own nieces to this art/craft. It would be like passing on a family tradition, and we have precious few of those in my clan!

My girlfriend and I are woefully poor when it comes to growing things. Over the years we have made several rather unsuccessful attempts to cultivate plants and bring life (of the vegetative variety) into our home. Please, for the sake of life that comes form a seed, give us the book. With its aid we might just be able to create a safe environment for plants and end this evil black thumbed genocide once and for all.

  219. Tiffany says:

For Valentine’s Day, I created this lovely arrangement of fuschia and white flowers. My boyfriend was pleasantly surprised and made sure to tell people: “Well, apparently she gets ME flowers for Valentine’s Day!” This book looks like the next logical step for us as we are currently in an apartment situation with no possibility of moving our operation outdoors.

  220. Lauren Wilson says:

I would love this book because I have a little 4 inch lovebird named Mango that somehow finds all of my indoor plants and chews them apart. I need a way to have plants indoors so he can’t get at them, and this book would really help me out!

I work at a botanical garden, where i teach schoolchildren about plants, ecosystems and how people interact with plants.
I could really use this book for new ideas for building terrariums with the kiddies and spreading green awesomeness in new york city!

  222. Frankie Shilo says:

Starting design program next year and want to connect it with Biological studies – need to get a head start on all info possible before i start on this new school year.

  223. Heather says:

I love the orchid terrarium on the cover! We’re planning a move and will be needing more plants in the new space. Looking forward to checking out the inside of this book.

  224. João Viveiros says:

    Hello!
This book would be perfect for me because I am a plant enthusiast and have developed a green thumb, however I found that terrariums are the only way i can keep plants happy without them dying, because i live in the Azores islands (Portugal), but I am taking college in the mainland. Having that in mind, i am absent from my apartment in the mainland very frequently to visit my family back in my hometown.
This book would be great in developing my skills and giving me new ideas, so I don’t have to worry about my little “pets” withering in my absence.
    Thanks!
    João Viveiros

  225. João Viveiros says:

    ooh, shoot!
i just realized this contest is from last year! i thought it was for this current month! oh well…

  226. Natalie Zee Drieu says:

sorry about that! i’ll close comments. you should definitely go check out this book! :)
