Book Review + Giveaway: One-Yard Wonders

Workshop Yarncraft

Banner Book Oneyardwonders

It takes a book like One-Yard Wonders to make you realize the potential of what you can make with simply one yard of fabric! Authors Rebecca Yaker and Patrica Hoskins fill the book with 101 sewing projects for you, your kids, and practically every room in your house. The spiral-bound book comes also with a pocket with lots of pattern pieces. Some of my favorite projects are the ones for organization and clothing. I’m still amazed that all of the projects can be made with just one yard. This book gives you a great excuse to splurge on a variety of patterned fabric since all you need is one yard!

Oneyardwonders Clothing-1
There are so many great clothing projects in the book for women and kids. I’m loving this strapless belted tunic (you could wear this now with a black turtleneck under!) and this adorable Ballet-Neck Toddler Dress.
Oneyardwonders Projects
The projects for the home are not to shabby either. I’m in dire need of organizing and cleaning. I love this Sewing Tools Trio project where you can sew up a sewing machine cover, wrist pincushion, and needlebook holder. I also love this hanging wall pocket — a pretty way to sort your bills.

  72. Aprilly says:

When I started sewing this summer, I thought that collecting fabric was like collecting yarn – buying a yard of fabric’s just like buying two skeins of yarn. You can probably make a scarf or something right? Now I have random fabric and I’m running out of people to make bags for. This book would be helpful at this point.

  73. Jacky says:

  76. notthatkate.wordpress.com says:

I am a fabric hoarder, a frugal fabric hoarder, so I have heaps of small cus of fabric – I also have a short attention span, so simple projects are where it is at.
    My fingers are crossed.

  81. Anonymous says:

I need this because I’m just sort of getting started sewing and it would be nice to have projects to try that only required one yard. That way when I totally mess it up (hopefully not though!) I only wasted one yard of fabric instead of more.

  82. Ivy says:

Times are tough, and I’d love some great ideas for high-impact gift projects that won’t break the supplies budget.

  83. Anonymous says:

I LOVE craft books of all kinds. I am also a student, so trying to collect books I actually have to buy, is a bit challenging. 88. Carrie Kilgore says:

This would be fabulous for my daughter, who loves to whip up things for her adorable 3 year-old and 11 year-old daughters, not to mention a thousand other wonderful things. She’s also part owner of a scrapbooking/media-art/creativity-gone-wild store, and I already see designs many of her customers would love. She’s raising her kids like I raised her and her siblings: so much more fun to make what you need than to buy it ready-made. Plus, with the pile of 1-2 yard fabulous cloths in her sewing room, she’s ready to plunge right in. (Maybe grandma might get a few nifty presents, too!)

  89. Caroline Kelley says:

Oh boy I need this book because I buy way to much 1 yard of fabric just cause I can’t resist and then never make anything with it cause its not enough! LOL Thanks!

sorry, posted 2 times, did not think it worked the first time.

  92. Ashley Whiteside says:

When my grandmother passed last year, she left a car-full of fantastic vintage fabric scraps and remnants to my mom. We’ve been working here and there to use the pieces, but wanted to make something for all 29 or Stella’s children, grandchildren, greats and even one great-great that knew her and loved her so much…using this fabric of hers, of course. Needing some help with ideas. So match great fabric, and so many deserving family members. (She left quite a legacy!)

  93. Beth says:

I love this idea! For those of us with a meager sewing budget, it looks like a great resource. Will definitely be checking it out whether I win one or not.

I need this book to give to a friend who has just begun to sew….these would be great projects for her to tackle! And I could borrow the book, too!

  102. Mom6 says:

Up until my 4th child was born, I was able to do quite a bit of sewing. That first year after she was born, my sewing time became extremely limited. The addition of children #5 and 6 put the kabosh on any hope I had of getting back to sewing like I use to. I still hanker to sew though – just need small, easy and quick projects that will fit in during naptime, between running kids to and from everywhere, etc with instant gratification potential. I pared down my stash considerably as I just didn’t have the time to do all those projects. However, I just could not bear to part with some of my nicer fabrics – most of which are right around that yard mark. I lucked into an Amy Butler sampler – all one yard cuts – a couple years back. How I would love to turn that into some lovely Christmas gifts for my extended family. With finances tighter than ever this year – I am going for a handmade Holiday. This book would help so much in that endeavor.

  103. jamie lynne says:

this looks amazing! i could definitely use this book, since i’ve been unable to find a job for going-on-five months now, and it has tons of great [and super-cheap] handmade gift ideas.

  106. Eli says:

I’m brand new to sewing, and the projects in this book would fire me up with that nearly-instant-gratification excitement that makes me more likely to stick with it for the long haul.

  107. IamSusie says:

I would love to have this book. I’m still fairly new to sewing and would appreciate the great variety of projects to help me learn. And the fact that each only requires a yard means I can afford the projects and not be overwhelmed with lots of fabric. Hopefully seeing one-yard wonders would help inspire me to think of my fabric with more potential.

  134. Stefanie says:

This is a fabulous idea, I need some stash busting help! The projects on the cover look very tempting, and I’m curious to see how to get some of them out of one yard. sunshyn_stef@hotmail.com

  145. Elaine Becker says:

I find myself buying yard cuts of fabric at vintage shops, thrift stores, and yard sales, just because they strike my fancy! I do the same with skeins of yarn, and One Skein Wonders was fantastic for clearing out my stash a bit! This book is a necessity in my craft corner!

  160. Lillian Walker says:

I go to estate & garage sales whenever I can, and I always seem to end up with at least 2 or 3 pieces of fabric (usually for less than $0.25 a yard!!) that are only a yard or so big. I’ve made quilts and little bags with them, but I’ve run out of ideas for using just a single yard. I could definitely put this book to good use using up my 100+ cuts of single yard material!

  161. Rachel says:

This is just what I need to get into sewing!

  162. whitty says:

I totally need this book because it has been on my Amazon wishlist for forever and I suffer from a pitiable condition that causes me to buy “just one yard” of every cute fabric I see. To finally put all those “just one yards” to use would be most excellent!
And my three pugs definitely need some cute little beds just like the pug on the cover. And at “just one yard” they could each have their own!!

  163. WaterPixie says:

A whole book with projects that only need one yard of fabric?!! YES, PLEASE!

  164. Rachel Claremon says:

I just received a sewing machine for my birthday last month, and now I’m itching for small projects to get started on!

  165. christieinspace says:

I am currently studying abroad working on my MLIS. I made sure to haul my sewing machine across the border because my creativity keeps me grounded and keeps homesickness at bay, but with my course load and little apartment, big crafty undertakings aren’t really an option. One yard projects sound just right :)

  166. wynk.pip.verisignlabs.com says:

  176. Sarah says:

  179. Katie says:

I need this book because I’ve had a horrible month: my apartment was robbed, the washer and heater broke, my family heirloom jewelry was stolen, and its been one work or school problem after another. The solace I find in my craft projects is what’s keeping me together, and there are only so many place mats and napkins this beginner sewer can make! Please provide me with new distractions!!!!

  180. KiltieKate says:

As a grad student, I don’t have a lot of income, so I buy fabric at garage sales and from the scrap bin. I am always looking for fun projects for gifts, new clothes, or decorations for the house. I also don’t have a lot of time, so these smaller projects would be perfect for balancing lab work and relaxing while sewing!

OMG! I would love this! Always looking for a short projects!

  186. Sonya says:

  188. Savanah says:

I have some fabric I have purchased just for the simple fact that I liked it. This book will give me an idea of what to do with some of it. A great way to reuse scrap pieces as well.

My mom and sister would both love this book! My mom because she has tons of one yard pieces of scraps left over from numerous sewing projects throughout the years, and my sister because she has just discovered how awesome sewing is – and one yard of fabric isn’t that expensive.
Or I could just take the book myself and make awesome Christmas presents…

  194. Salihan says:

I’ve got a bad case of RSI from knitting and crocheting and I NEED this book as I’m learning to sew in order to save my arm for future use. And with a tight budget, small 1-yard projects are ideal!

  197. carrie says:

I have tons of 1 yard cuts of fabric in my stash!

  198. cdsedlar says:

Yes, that’s me. I always justify buying 1-1 1/2 yards extra because I think, “What if I decide to alter the pattern, I’ll NEED more” or “What if I miss-cut, I’ll NEED more” or “This is so pretty, I NEED some for my quilting stash” or “Oh, it’s on sale, I NEED a little”….Do you see the problem?? I love the variety of pictures of things I could make as gifts, for my home and for myself to use my stash of NEEDed extra yards. So, PLEASE justify the “justifier”….I would LOVE to have this book!! Thanks for the give-away!

  199. Pickled Weasel says:

Mainly because I have such a huge stash of diddy bits of fabric, and I have a self-imposed fabirc buying ban until I use some of it up. So if I won this book it would contribute to the craft economy as I would be able to buy more fabric :)

  203. yarngasm.wordpress.com says:

I need this book to help go through my stash! If I see something that really jumps out at me I tend to buy a yard or two of material, even when I don’t have a project in mind. Which has led to a large stash of large pieces of fabric that I don’t have any specific use for.
And quick projects really are more my cuppa :)

This book would be perfect for me and I could really embrace sewing (I’ve always wanted to be a legit sewer instead of just an occasional…rare sewer).

Growing up as a seamstress’ daughter I horded 1 yard remnants. Now that I am “grown” up and out of the house and therefore on a very tight budget… I find that all I can usually afford is 1 yard segments of fab fabrics. A yard is the perfect size to use for any project because it’ll never cost more than $10 (in my cheap Jo-ann’s craft world).

  401. Jess says:

I am finally getting a sewing machine for christmas this year and would really like to learn to make these things

  402. StephSC says:

I could really use this book to pare down this mountain of fabric that competes for space with yarn and fiber. It would help with Christmas presents also. Shauser@sc.rr.com

  403. Callie says:

I would love to have this book because organizing all of my craft supplies is my new task…and being able to make things out of my extra fabrics would speed that organizing along!! :-)

  404. tigerbarb@gmail.com says:

I have several one yard fabrics. What do I do? Thanks for the chance to win.

  405. Laura Prickett-Rice says:

I’m fortunately from a family of crafters and we all love making presents for each other. However, I currently have one niece and nephew with another on the way, and now I have an entire new (in-law) side of the family to craft for! So finding ways to use less fabric for more beautiful presents is full of win. I’m hoping I can someday teach my niece and sister-in-law how to sew, and what better way than to start with good projects like these?
Plus I want to get my fabric stash back from the cats. They’ve claimed it as their favorite sleeping space.

  406. Tammy C says:

I couldn’t figure out how to sign up so I could enter the contest, so I gave up and am commenting “anonymously”. PLEASE PICK ME!!! I haven’t sewn in awhile, and I’m quite nervous to get started again. I bought a new sewing machine and a bit of material. I would LOVE to have this book to help me get started again. I know I’m not ready for any big projects yet, and this book would be wonderful to start out with. Thank you!! tkcharlesworth@aol.com

  407. Paula says:

I would love this book, I am always looking for small, useful items to make for the Handsewn Crafts class I teach at the local Community College!

  408. Nina says:

I need this book because I am totally broke, and a yard of fabric is about all I can afford :)

  409. dinergirl says:

I have a collection of one-yards of fabric that was just too cute or cool to not get. This book would be fabulous to bust through some of it!
The projects on the front look really lovely.

  410. Rachel says:

Oooh! Awesome. I have some fabric that should definitely be used up. I can make some awesome gifts from these patterns!

  411. Megan says:

I need it, because I have commitment issues, and one yard is just right for me!

  412. The Purple Monkey says:

I ran an at home business for a while and as a result I have a room full of small sections of fabric (mostly 1 yd increments) that I am convinced I’m going to use up. This book could help get that all under control!

As a craft spaz, I need direction in what to do and what to do it with. I would LOVE to have a book aimed at my short attention span that would inspire me. Thanks!

  417. Amy Reed says:

It seems as though whenever I find a really fantastic bolt of fabric that costs more than a few dollars (Amy Butler, for example) all I can talk myself into purchasing is one yard. I now have a very nice pile of one yard cuts and nothing at all to do with them. But I just couldn’t help but buy them at the time! This book looks like it’s just my style.

I just love this idea, having a huge box of leftover fabrics, many a yard or a bit more. I’d love to know what to do with them! Based on the article, I can see that my granddaughter would get a lot of clothing & lots of cozy things for the house would begin to turn up if I win this book. Thanks for the giveaway!

  419. Mary says:

I loved one skein wonders and at the time thought one for fabric would be great, so yay that is now out!

  420. upstatelisa says:

  422. Plutomeisje says:

Omg, it would be perfect should I win this book! My sewing machine is finally repaired and I’m itching to start on a few new projects. Soonish (second half of december -__-) it’s also that time of the year when one has to study her ass off and little crafting projects would be the perfect thing to relax my mind once in a while!

  423. Dollie says:

I’m pretty much just starting out with sewing, and would find it great to win this book for all the ideas it offers. I usually will only allow myself to buy one yard, since I’m new to the whole thing. :) SO yep, I’d LOVE to win this :)

i have so many random yards of fabric–this book sounds like a great resources for a pack-rat/long-sewing-project-starter-but-never-finisher like myself.

  426. Dexene says:

I’ve always been a little intimidated by sewing, but I think starting on new projects like these would be a great way to get my feet wet and hopefully start a new love.

  427. epgjames says:

    I need this!
    1) We just sunk our life savings into buying a house and I have no money for big sewing projects, but have lots of 1 yard scraps!
    2) Since we just bought a house we have SO MUCH to organize and it looks like there are good home-organizing projects in here
    3) Since we just bought the new house I don’t have time for BIG projects. But I don’t want to neglect my sewing because I absolutely love to sew.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I’d buy it myself, but I can’t afford anything! (see #1).
    THANK YOU!

I go to fashion college, just moved into my own place and I have a ton of yard-long scraps left over from projects that I never know what to do with! I can’t get rid of them because they’re pretty high quality fabrics and I hate to store them away for too long. Plus, projects that don’t require too much fabric tend to take less time, and with a full time job and classes to attend, I need to cut my hobbies down to as short a time as possible!

  430. Michele says:

I would love to win this book. I have a bunch of fabric that i am wondering what I should do with it.

  431. karmyk says:

My husband and I just had a baby, and it seems like all the baby stuff has been taking over our tiny little one bedroom apartment lately.. I saw this book while enjoying a free mommy moment away the other day, and the projects looked so fun and (generally) simple… and it would be nice to create gifts for family who live far away by doing a little bit of crafting without creating a great big mess with the few moments of free time I get during the day. Besides, growing up, it always felt like the homemade gifts I got from my mother, grandmother, and aunts were so much more meaningful, no matter how simple they were. I have no idea what would make me deserve winning such a cool book… but I figured I might as well try. :)

  432. Alexa says:

Every time I go to the book store I look for this book and they never have it!! I need to get a copy!

  433. Drizella says:

What a great book! I would love, love, love to win this! I do a lot of charity sewing. I see a few things I could use my stash for to make and donate to one of my causes.

  434. Trillian says:

This would be an excellent aid for my new year’s resolution to whittle away at my fabric stash (more of a hoard, honestly). In the past I always ended up buying only a yard of fabric because its pretty, without any idea what I was going to do with it.

  435. destiny says:

I came so very close to buying this the other day, but decided since it’s Christmas time, I’m not allowed to buy myself any crafting books. I’d so love to have it to help out in making Christmas gifts!

  436. April says:

This would be the perfect birthday present for a friend of mine!

  437. rachelnm says:

I need this because I can’t sew…and when thinking all I need is a yard to start a project, it doesn’t seem so daunting & I’ll try :)
Need a change from my knitting & crochet

I need this book because I love “One Skein Wonders,” the knitting book, and I am also a sewer with lots of small bits of fabric dying to be turned into wonders!

I’m learning to sew and this would be a wonderful tool to have! I LOVE to go to Garage Sales and/or thrift stores and I always find awesome fabrics, but they’re usually pretty small to work with. I hope you can help a sewing virgin out! Thank you!
