Book Review + Giveaway + Pattern: Crochet for Bears to Wear

Header Crochetforbears

Crochet for Bears to Wear is the new crochet book by Amy O’Neill Houck. Today is the start of the official blog tour and we are so excited to be kicking it off! As a side note, I never realized until a couple weeks ago how expensive doll clothes are. In some cases, they are more expensive than clothes for my toddler Chloe! This book came just in time because not only can I have lots of little outfits for Chloe’s stuffed bears and rabbits, I’ll be able to enjoy some valuable crafting time. From crochet cardigans, dresses, vests, hats and more, I love that with each outfit I’ll be able to try out a variety of crochet stitches (seamless top-down, lace, ribbing, and more). Plus, with these small clothes, I can finish them in no time! The book features more than 20 patterns with instructions for each on how to measure and fit each outfit. It’s a great way for beginning crocheters to get started on crocheting clothing. I love the adorable photography in the book featuring the bears in special settings too. Not only will Chloe enjoy playing dress up with these beautiful outfits, I’ll also have the satisfaction that her “babies” will never grow out of them.
Cozy-Turtleneck Pattern
Cozy Turtleneck Pattern
As a special treat, we’ve got a pattern excerpt from the book! Crochet this cozy turtleneck for your little bear. Here’s Pearl wearing her favorite turtleneck and enjoying a cup of cocoa. The sideways ribbed texture gives extra warmth and stretch to the fabric. This sweater is worked modularly in one piece; the only finishing is crocheting the underarm and side seams.

I love Amy’s work and am an avid follower of her blog. I also love anything in miniature. I look forward to making some of these outfits for my niece’s bears and dolls.

  4. Sandy L says:

I love my bears, and I would love to dress them up nicely! I want to pick up crocheting again, and this book would be my guide.

  5. Tara Fisher says:

My 2 year old had to have blood work earlier this year. I was so upset to have to put him through this that we went to the mall next door afterward and I let him build a bear to ease his pain. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough $ at the time to let him buy clothes. How cool would it be for me to make his bear “Tan Beary” some clothes!?!? Thanks for the pattern!

  6. Jenny says:

This book looks adorable! I would love to win this for my little sister, since she has recently started crocheting again, and loves it, and she’s got mountains of stuffed animals to dress (plus I’m sure she’d share the book with me – haha!)

I would love the books as I crochet for charity as well as I need some nice clothes for the bears that I have in my bear collection. I have not been well (kidney failure) and hubby has been out of work for 2 months now. I wouldn’t be able to get the book until he finds work :(

Love making clothes for little bears for kids; this would be great; I loved her knitting patterns for the bears…can’t wait to see the crocheted designs.

  10. debd94 says:

When I was young, my mother sewed clothes for our stuffed animals, and especially for our teddy bears. She would love this book so that she can crochet for her grandkids’ teddies.

  11. Kathrin says:

The reason why I’d love to have this book might sound a little weird. My reason is called “Edmund”. He is my two years old dog. His fur does not keep him warm during winter so he usually needs a coat. I bought him something warm, but I would prefer to make something for him myself. Edmund is (almost) as small as a teddy bear so I believe the patterns would be a great help for me to keep him warm.

  12. Lindsey says:

Two of my mom’s favorite things in the world are teddy bears and crocheting. She’s got plenty of teddies that need something to wear!

  13. haley says:

Social services took my bears away after they were arrested for indecent exposure. They are now in protective custody with a foster family and I can not get them back until I can demonstrate that I can keep them adequately and suitably clothed. :-(

  14. ThunderMama says:

I would love to win this book because I love Amy’s work, my daughter has way too many bears, dolls and stuffed animals to clothe otherwise, and I would love the opportunity to learn about making crochet clothing.

  16. punk apple says:

I’m (re)discovering the joys of crocheting and what would be cuter than making clothes for stuffed animals?

  17. kristilou says:

I gave birth on Tuesday April 6 and my daughter is currently in the NICU. I have been crocheting since last Fall and have yet to make any garments, so this would be a good intro and a chance to use up some of my leftover stash. Looks like some very cute patterns and I plan to make the turtleneck. Thanks for the chance!

  18. Sandradee says:

My daughter’s room is full of naked dolls. She takes the clothes off of them to put onto her bears, unicorns, puppies, and any other plush animal she can find. I love to crochet, and she would love to have more clothes for her animals.

  19. Molly Knight says:

I have a huge pile of teddy bears and other stuffed animals at the end of my bed. Just imagine them all clothed in adorable, custom, hand-made clothes! I’ve wanted to crochet clothes forever – I have an image in my mind of this cardigan that will SOMEDAY come to fruition – and this book would definitely give me the boost needed to do just that.
I’mm so excited about this book! Thanks for the giveaway!

  29. Darling Nikki says:

I have been wanting this book since I saw the blurb in Crochet Today! I would love to win a copy because I think it would be the perfect USEFUL introduction to garment construction, which has so far scared me. I would not feel I was wasting precious yarn, because the finished projects would go to my 6yr old and my niece! And then when I’m all done, maybe I will have the nerve to tackle something me sized!!

  30. Shirley says:

My daughter-in-law put out the call via Facebook for a pattern for clothes for her teddy bear. She can’t find them anywhere. I would love to surprise her and win this book so I can make some for my grandaughter and just watch the smile grow on her face when she gets them.

i absolutely love Knits for Bears to wear and I think this book will be the perfect opportunity to improve my crochet skills (to which Amy was a big contributor!)

  32. El Gato Cranko says:

I would like to win this book for my wife – we live in Maine, and our bears get very cold here!
