As a former art handler, it’s hard to imagine anything more terrifying than having to move a giant globe made from thousands of individually painted matches, like this one made by artist Andy Yoder over the course of 2 years. Luckily, the sculpture has apparently been covered in fire retardant, but that doesn’t take away from the powerful statement that this work clearly makes; the world is a very fragile and volatile place.

The frame is foam and cardboard inside a plywood skeleton. The matches are glued at the bottom with wood glue. He also doused the whole thing in flame retardant. Part of the reason it took so long though is he had to paint each individual match to the color he wanted because he couldn’t find any of the colors.

This potentially anxiety-inducing wonder will be exhibited by Winkleman Gallery during the Pulse New York Contemporary Art Fair, May 8-11 at 125 West 18th Street in Manhattan.
