Mezzanine in SF was packed Wednesday night with over 400 people waiting with anticipation for the Bay Area premiere of Handmade Nation. Part of the SF Film Society’s SF360 Film + Club series, it was a fun night and atmosphere for the screening with music booming from the DJ, drinks, and indie shopping with the mini-craft fair component. If you can believe it, I met Lisa Congdon for the first time! I’ve been a long time fan of her art. We both hugged and commented how we felt like we already knew each other from the blog world. Yay for the Internet!
By the time the documentary started at 7:30pm, every corner, floor, balcony, and seat were filled with excited eyes on the screen. For me, it was personally moving having first met most of the crafters featured in the documentary back in 2006-07 while Faythe Levine was filming it and while I was traveling to all the various craft fairs to help promote the newly launched CRAFT. I loved seeing the inspiration of how some of these crafty women and men create their craft, sell their wares at craft fairs, and run their own stores. I did little cheers for all my friends featured and props to Susan Beal for mentioning CRAFT.
After the documentary, the panel started consisting of myself, Lisa Congdon of Rare Device; Derek Fagerstrom of The Curiosity Shoppe and DIY Co-editor at design*sponge; and Stephanie Syjuco, fine artist and professor. Most of the questions that were asked of us centered around the craft business and the issues facing us with the economy. Nothing could really be concluded but the one thing we all agreed on is that even in these hard economic times, there’s an enjoyment to be found in making things, maybe even more so now.
Thanks to everyone who came up after to talk to me and for visiting CRAFT! A few more photos can be found in my Handmade Nation in SF Flickr Set.
Next month, our own Rachel Hobson will be at the Handmade Nation premiere in Portland, OR. Can’t wait!
