How-To: Style a Scarf in 1988

The Internet Archive shared this astounding VHS find from 1988, which was apparently aimed at women who were hoping that nobody would notice them wearing the same clothes as long as they wore scarves in lots of distracting ways. Things really heat up around the 13:50 mark when Susan shares her “hot tips” and then goes on to describes the virtues of scarf clips.

Clips, clips, glorious clips, come in a variety of looks from classic to decorative, in gold or silver, in all sizes that work with all scarf shapes and fabrics. Clips range from a small one inch back loop to the larger one and a half inch back loop, perfect for shawls and wool chalis. Shawl slides are the largest of the loops and are thread just like a belt buckle. Shawl slides are the answer to how to wear a shawl.

Examples of transformations you can expect to see in this video include:

Practice with this video and invent your own styles, which will express your own individuality. Scarfs are the answer on how to expand your wardrobe and add fashion and glamour to everything you wear.

    Wow. Just wow.
I had no idea someone could riff on scarves for 16 minutes, but there you have it.

I could do that swimsuit cover up. But I’d have to use a bed sheet instead of a scarf.

That’s funny!! Cause if you actually lived through the 80’s (when clothes were quite expensive), you did stuff like that to vary your looks for work. I never had a big work wardrobe and we did scarf and accessory things to change it up every day. This was especially important when you traveled, as you would have a minimum of clothing to wear to 10 days worth of business meetings, and had to look nice the entire time. Nostalgic…ahh.

Really? Nobody has mentioned the shoulder pads?
