How-To: Bright and Fresh Garden Furniture

Make_Krylon_Button_v3.gifAfter spending summers in the sun and winters in the rain, outdoor furniture begins looking tired. Without stain or paint, the elements will eventually ruin the look and the wood itself will begin to rot. That is what Mother Nature had is store for my redwood deck chairs, but I saved them and posted instructions to follow on Make: Projects.
Krylon’s new Dual spray paint is a combination of primer and paint. It’s a great way to apply a layer of protection and completely makeover almost anything at the same time. It just requires a little bit of elbow grease, sanding the wood down, and then spraying layer after layer of color. Spray painting is immediately satisfying and really fun.

My old drab chairs are now bright and fresh. The bold mandarin color contrasts beautifully with the tall green grass and overgrown flowers in my garden. Plus, they are protected from weathering for seasons to come.

I’m glad you posted this. I see people everyday that just don’t understand how badly the sun and the elements will beat up basically whatever is left exposed. The idea people, is for the finish to get damaged in order to protect the material beneath from damage. If you have a wood deck that has an oil finish and you don’t want the wood to crack and check, you need to recoat with oil every year or when you can see that the wood is changing color to grey (for instance if the damn sprinklers are hitting it). If you have a varnished front entry way, as my neighbors do, you had better add another coat of varnish BEFORE the current one starts cracking badly or you just might have to sand the whole thing down to raw wood and start over, as they just did. A coat of paint isn’t magic and it won’t last forever, so keep up on the maintenance everyone and your stuff will last a good long time.
