CRAFT: DIY Wedding

Happy June from the Motor City! When I was in California for Maker Faire, I had the privilege of hosting a demo in our CRAFT booth. With another wedding season upon us, I’ve got flowers and sparkly things on the brain. I love corsages, but I’d love it even more if I could make them last forever, especially for the younger wedding party members. These button corsages are fast to make, cheap to produce, and help get your sewing skills up to par. Take a look.

SUPPLIES

  • Stiff felt (In the felt aisle, you’ll immediately be able to tell the difference when compared to the floppy vareity)
  • Floppy felt or other fabric
  • Buttons of your choice (Any shape or size will work!)
  • Elastic (As thick or wide as you like)
  • Needle, thread, scissors

STEP 1: Draw a circle on your stiffer felt (wrong side of course), and cut out with sharp scissors. I find the bottom of a pop (yes, I know I should say soda) can is a good size.
STEP 2: Cut a slightly smaller circle from the floppy felt. Place that piece on the stiff piece and make a quick cross stitch to keep the two pieces together.
At this point you can repeat more pieces of stiff and floppy felt as you like. Or you can move on to the button.
STEP 3: Sew the button as you normally would to any piece of clothing. Make sure to go through all the pieces of felt and fabric – this will keep it extra tight.
STEP 4: Measure a piece of elastic to fit the wearer’s wrist. Not too snug, but not too loose. Using a cross stitch again, tack the elastic into place on both sides. I made my stitches on the first stiff piece only so that they were hidden under the other pieces of felt.
STEP 5: Put that wrist corsage on and get ready to hit the down. Or walk down the aisle… You could also sew a pinback or ponytail holder on, too!
