Friendship bracelets made from embroidery thread are a hot trend in crafting right now. And feather hair extensions are a hot trend in beauty right now. Combine the two, and you have a feather hair wrap. Of course, I had to take it to the next level with a third trend- ombre.
Presenting the Ombre Feather Hair Wrap. The technique is simple- just wrap the embroidery thread around a braid. The look lasts for ages but is still temporary, and it won’t ruin your hair when you decide to take it out. Bonus- unlike expensive feather extensions ($25 for 3 feathers!!), I found embroidery floss for 33 cents!
Materials:
Tiny rubber bands
Embroidery floss in 4 different colors
Scissors
Feather
Directions
Step 1: Choose a small lock of hair and make it into a tiny braid. Pick a piece of hair that is at least an inch down from the top of the head, so that the knot will be hidden. If you are looking for something more discreet, make the braid from a piece of hair at the back of your neck. Secure the braid with a small rubber band.
Step 2: Measure and cut a piece of each embroidery floss that is three times longer than the length of the braid.
Step 3: Combine the four colors of floss, fold them in half, and knot them around the braid where the hair meets the scalp. By folding the floss in half, the four pieces of thread are now eight strands. Be sure to make the knot very tight, because if you don’t as you work, the thread will slide right down the braid.
Step 4: Separate one strand of the darkest color of floss. Keep the other seven strands and the braid in one hand, and begin wrapping the single piece of floss around them with the other.
Step 5: Wrap and wrap and wrap the thread. Work neatly and evenly down the braid. As you work, you will near the end of this first thread. When you have about 1/2″ left, pull out the second strand of the same color. Wrap the short end of your first thread in with the braid, and continue on.
Step 6: When you have wrapped 1/4 of the braid with the first color, switch colors. To create the ombre look, just move from the darkest to the lightest shades. Wrap each quarter of the braid with one shade.
Step 7: When you reach the rubber band, remove it and add the feather. Just hold the tip of the feather in with the braid and the 7 strands of floss. Wrap the hair and feather tightly together. Wrap at least 1/2″ of the feather to hold it in place. I did not wrap enough of the feather during my first attempt, and it fell out the next day, so be sure to secure plenty of the feather into the wrap.
Step 8: To finish the wrap, knot the strings tightly. I knotted the longest piece of string around itself, then tied off the other shorter ends to each other.
