How-To: Quilted iPhone Case for Dad

Yarncraft

I’ve really been enjoying Susan Beal’s Modern Log Cabin Quilting book, so when I decided I wanted to make a case for my dad as Father’s Day gift to celebrate his new iPhone, I took my inspiration from her camera case pattern and decided to quilt a holder.

I started out by cutting my fabric strips. I went with dark colors from a new Alexander Henry line since my dad loves Halloween. I made the case a bit bigger, as you can see from the first photo, so that my dad can tuck extra trinkets inside when he’s out and about. The sizes were:

  • Two 3-inch wide strips
  • One 6-inch by 12-inch piece of batting
  • One 6-inch by 12-inch piece of backing
  • I cut a piece of fabric to make my own binding, but decided to use bias tape in the end

Sew your two strips together and press. Sandwich your top, batting, and backing piece all together and sew down the center to stitch in the ditch.

Sew several straight lines on each side of the original center stitch. Sew as many or few lines of stitches as you’d like. Once you’re finished, you’ll have one continuous piece of fabric for the case.

Before you form the case, sew a piece of binding or twill tape on one end. This is for the inside flap.

With the twill tape on, sew a piece of Velcro right below. Sew the matching piece on the other end so that when you fold the top down, it will attach to the bottom piece of Velcro.

Fold up the bottom and stitch both sides. Add your bias tape all the way around. You’re done!

I added a Maker patch since my dad is a big fan of Maker Faire and a Demerit badge that you can simply iron on. On the back is a belt loop for belt readiness.
