How-To: Vintage Mother’s Day Corsage

Flowers are fabulous, I agree, but there is a downside to gifting them to your favorite people on various holidays: they always die — it’s just what they do, they can’t help it. So instead of gifting your mother (or other awesome woman in your life) with a gift that has a short lifespan, why not make her this bejeweled bauble that can be enjoyed year after year?

Materials

3 pieces wool felt, 2¼” square any colors you choose
Assortment of vintage costume jewelry
Needle
Thread
Embroidery thread
Pin back
Super-bond craft glue
like E-6000 or Aleene’s Super Fabric
Scissors
Needlenose pliers
Thimble
(optional)

Directions

Mday Corsage Step1
Step 1: Cut 2 felt pieces into matching circles. Cut 2 “leaves” from the third piece. You can use the same color for all 3 or use 3 different colors; one 4½” square piece will cover all you need. I used purple for my base pieces and a teal for the leaves.
Mday Corsage Step2
Step 2: Stitch the pin back to the back of one circle, centered about ¼” from the top.
Mday Corsage Step3
Step 3: Glue your “leaves” to the back of the felt piece with the pin back, so that they hang down below the bouquet a little bit.
Mday Corsage Step4B
Step 4: Layer the second circle to the back of the corsage piece. Use scissors to make a tiny slit in the fabric where the pin back is positioned so that it “pokes” through. Nestle the circles together and whipstitch around the edges, or if you want to get all fancy, you can do a blanket stitch here as well.
Mday Corsage Step5
Step 5: Flip over the corsage base and set it aside. Play with the jewelry assortment until you have the pieces arranged how you like. You will need about 8 pieces, depending on size. Use needlenose pliers to twist off the pin backs and earring clips.
Mday Corsage Step6A
Step 6: Tack each piece down to the front of your corsage base with super craft glue, allow at least 2 hours to dry.
Mday Corsage Final
Step 7: Once dry, wrap it up all pretty in a small brown bag, box, or happy tissue and present to your Mama or Granny on Mother’s Day. You can also make an extra one for yourself even if you’re not a mama, I won’t tell. This also makes a great gift for any awesome woman in your life. Happy Mother’s Day!
