Michelle Hamer’s Hand-Stitched Pixelated Images

Artist Michelle Hammer re-creates fascinating images of the real world in these stunning pieces of hand-stitched needlepoint.

Michelle Hamer uses hand-stitched pixilation to map the small in-between moments that characterise everyday life. Often focussing on text and signage within urban landscapes it highlights contemporary social beliefs, ideals and aspirations.

Hamer’s work is based on both ‘found’ text and her own photographs -translated predominantly by eye into her hand-stitching. This traditional technique exposes an ironic romanticism present between manual pixilation and the digitalisation of imagery in contemporary society.
