My Hair Barbie

Blake wrote in about this interesting project by Missy Diggs, a crafty blogger who is undergoing treatment for Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Before she started chemotherapy, she cut off all of her hair and saved it. When her daughter brought home a Barbie with a bad haircut, she learned how to replace the Barbie hair with some of her own hair. She includes instructions in case you ever want to replace the hair on your Barbie’s head.

That is just plain weird, creepy.
I can understand the trauma associated with losing your hair in the incident of cancer, but that is just kinda freaky.

I think it is a pretty cool way to deal with the trauma of cancer and if you read the story on her blog, it seems a counselor mentioned that it would be a great way for kids with cancer to deal as well. A lot of people with cancer get wigs created from human hair so I don’t see why a Barbie with human hair is so weird. Plus, real hair is a lot nicer than fake Barbie hair anyway.

I think it’s cool, too. I have a friend who knew she would lose her hair with her treatments, so she shaved it off ahead of time. She felt very strong about it, it was something in the process that she could control.

I think it kind of suits Barbie. It just needs to be more relaxed. It looks like she got electricuted or she’s really surprized.

Re-rooting a Barbie with your own hair is a great way to feel a little bit more active in a process that you have little control over (cancer, chemo, hair loss, etc.). It is also great for Barbie doll restorers because now Barbie’s’ hair can be styled and taken care of just like her own. Using heated tools (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron…) will usually just melt or deform the saran fibers used for Barbie’s hair. Now your dolls’ hair can be dyed, washed, cut and styled much more easily! I have two OOAK dolls with human hair and I think they have easily the best back story ever!

I found a barbie doll in a charity shop and she appears to have real human hair. Is this possible? Has anyone ever seen this before?
