Singer is celebrating their 160th anniversary at My Singer Story and is looking for stories – your stories. You can post your favorite memories as well as sign up for a commerorative certificate for your Singer machine. I learned how to sew on my mom and grandma’s Singers, so I’m off to add my stories now.

The year was 1946 and a beautiful spring day. My family and I lived in a small complex where I was fortunate to be the chief babysitter. A few doors away a soldier had come home from the Big war and had requested his landlady to introduce us. We met on this beautiful day as I was taking care of a neighbors child, and 3 months later we became man and wife. Of course everyone said “it wouldn’t last”, but we proved them wrong, 65 years later, with 4 lovely children, 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The highlight of my story is that the very first thing my “honey” bought me was my Singer featherweight sewing machine. That machine which is still in service, has made little boys pants and dresses for our girls as well as many items for me. It will continue to be a great little machine. Thanks Singer.

Congratulations on 160 years of manufacturing a wonderful machine. I am 73 years old and started sewing on my mother’s treadle machine when I was nine. I started 4-H when I was ten and the teacher had several featherweight Singers we used. My sister and I completed 10 years of 4-H using Singer’s. After getting married, I taught 4-H sewing to first and second year members. I used portable Singer’s (six in all) to teach 60 first year members and 40 second year members. The girls really had to learn to share because we had so few machines. I now am teaching my granddaughter to sew. Her dad bought her a Singer too. After retirement, I have started to quilt. I have pieced 13 queen size quilts together by machine and then hand quilt them for Christmas gifts for our children and grandchildren. Singer has been a very important part of my life. Thank you so much.
