Organizing Books by Color

There’s this new trend of organizing books by color. I love this photo by chotda linked via the Rainbow of Books Flickr group. This growing trend is cool but if I were gonna do this, I’d probably have to create a little digital database so I’d be able to find the right book I was looking for. Also, I’d probably be totally OCD if a book was out of place due to a subtle color tone. Jessica at How about Orange points to a San Francisco bookstore Superhero that rearranged all 20,000 books by color. [ via ] Link.

I can’t even imagine trying to shop at a store ( or use a library) that organized all its books by color. A strong visual statement, but less than useful. I need all my crafting books together!

I was afraid of it being almost impossible to find a book once I’d sorted them by color, but it’s not very hard at all. I think it’s because I spent so much time arranging and re-arranging them that I have a better understanding of what color they are. The biggest challenge once the ROYGBIV library was finished was stopping myself from buying books based on their color!

It’s not as hard as you would think to find books once they’re sorted by color — once I did it, I could find almost any book on the first try. Part of it is touching them and agonizing over their spines for so long during the organizing process. Now I just have to stop myself from buying books based solely on their color!

For me, it is entirely pragmatic. I don’t easily remember the titles and authors of my many books. But I do remember their colors. The only hard part is in distinguishing the color of a cover from the spine; when in doubt, I check the black spines first, then the white spines (where most of my books hang out). of course it is also aesthetically appealing since I appear to be attracted to colors.
