How-To: Fold Towel Pockets

By , 2010/03/24 @ 9:06 am

My parents are getting ready to run a bed and breakfast, so I always think of them when I see things like Instructables user angelpeach838′s pocket towel folding tutorial. It’s definitely too fancy for my house, but if you’ve got houseguests to impress, this could do the trick.

This month, with our UpCraft theme in full swing, we’ve seen a lot of really clever ideas for refreshing the old while keeping the landfills light on materials that can be reused. I love Natalie Friedman’s crafty project from CRAFT Volume 09 on how to transform a detergent bottle destined for (at best) the recycling bin into a beautiful vase using papier-mâché.
Make a papier-mâché vessel out of an old plastic container.
By Natalie Friedman

A while back I started noticing how many plastic containers I had in my life. And while many are recyclable, I thought there had to be some cool way of reusing these things too.
I made my first vessels from tennis ball cans — they’re the perfect size for storing long paintbrushes. Since then I’ve used yogurt containers, laundry detergent bottles, pill bottles, and food containers. It has completely changed the way I look at my recycling. Who knows, my next artistic masterpiece may be in there.

I’ve revealed my love for anything in miniature several times here, so of course I’m loving this sweet little tutorial on whipping up your own dollhouse art from Teddy’s Amazing Adventures. The best part? The tutorial is given from the perspective of the adorable amigurumi bear, Teddy, with wee little tools. I love it!

With the official call to Makers up and running for the Detroit Maker Faire this summer, I can’t wait to see what kind of great ideas come in. And thinking of that made me think of City Bird, one of my favorite Detroit crafty duos helping DIY folks across Michigan and the midwest bring their goods to eager shoppers.

How To: New Journal from an Old Book

How-To Tuesdays

There are few things more lovely than a vintage book. I love pouring through discarded books at my local junk store. Old books are not only attractive, but they often have interesting titles, eye catching fonts, great cover design and most importantly- built in character. I can always justify spending a little bit of my pocket money on books; but honestly, what am I really going to do with a copy of Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders that was printed in 1975???
In about an hour I was able to transform the musty text into a cute and useful new blank book. I used standard printer paper and some embroidery thread, but if you like, make this project with thick handmade pages and thin waxed cord. Each book you make will be one-of-a-kind.
Oh, on a side note: One of my favorite parts of this project was finally using the Mysterious Tool that I posted earlier this month. Thanks for all your comments- you have totally inspired me to make use of the punch is as many ways as possible!
