SVA Launches MFA in Products of Design

A new graduate program launches at the School of the Visual Arts in NYC! I’m excited to be among the faculty. Core77’s Allan Chochinov chairs the new program, called Products of Design:

Today marks the launch of a new MFA program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. The MFA in Products of Design, chaired by Core77’s own Allan Chochinov and co-founded with Steven Heller, will launch fall of 2012 and aims to provide an immersive, strategic, and making-based curriculum around purposeful artifacts, systems, and design offerings. Faculty include luminaries from leading organizations such as IDEO, Fuse Project, Antenna, Smart, frog, DesignObserver, Doblin, MAKE, Material ConneXion, and more. Visiting lecturers include Tim Brown, Janine Benyus, Aimee Mullins, Scott Wilson, Dale Dougherty and others to be announced as the program ramps up.

There is a one-week intensive Products of Design Summer Program in France this July 10-16 at the extaordinary Boisbuchet Estate, and applicants can be students, teachers, and makers of all sorts (maximum 20 persons so apply now). Check out the page on the site for more info.

Applications for the 2012 MFA Program will open April 15th, but be sure to visit the website to get the full low-down on the philosophy, goals, and deliverables of this unique program in graduate design education.

What great news! I’m a third year student of design at USC. And I must say, our program completely misses the mark. We are groomed for a design world that exists more in recollections of our faculty than in the current business world. “Design thinking” is a concept our professors have rarely heard. I am pumped to apply for fall 2012 at SVA and hope, in the mean time, to never be assigned a fake movie poster project again.
