Self-taught artist Tine Kindermann was born in Germany and has been based in New York since 1994. She creates captivating dioramas and peephole installations based on traditional German folklore from salvaged materials that she finds on the streets of New York City.

From a distance, her wall-mounted works just appear to be boxes and containers, but upon closer inspection, an enigmatic scene is often revealed.

I have been making dioramas and peephole installations since 1997. This medium has allowed me to combine several areas of my interest, including using found objects with their richness of texture and history, and narratives conveyed through visual evidence and the body language of the figurines I create from Sculpey. The fact that these tableauxs are often hidden in peephole boxes adds to the surprise and voyeuristic pleasure of the viewer.

Her largest solo exhibition to date is currently on display at vintage furniture and oddity show space RePOP in Brooklyn through July 31st. The works really need to be peeked in at to be appreciated, so drop in if you get the chance.
