Educational resources on the web are abundant and the software packages themselves come with flexible trial versions and extensive documentations. Still, it can be hard to get started, and one of the biggest problems with starting 3D animation is choosing the right package to start with. There are numerous options with different strengths and weaknesses. In this introductory couse, we will look at 3 mainstream packages, namely; Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max and Sidefx Houdini. We'll will cover some basics with each one of them and learn simple 3d workflows as we compare and contrast these 3 packages with each other. What Should You Expect To Learn? A solid introduction to 3d workflows in general, and an understanding of the type of work that is involved. A look at basic modelling and animation examples. How different packages handle the same workflows and how they differ, and how to choose the one that is most suitable for you. Why some programs are preferred over others in dealing with certain challenges. What do you need to bring? You need your laptop, and install trial versions of all three programs so you can follow along with the instructor: Maya http://usa.autodesk.com/maya/trial/ 3DS max http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/download/item?id=16324410&siteID=123112 Houdini http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_download&task=apprentice Be careful! The trial versions of 3ds Max and Maya are limited to a 30 day period, so is advisable to download them closer to the course date. This resiriction doesn’t apply to Sidefx Houdini. Bad news, Mac users: 3D Studio Max is only available for PC. Now, you can still come with your Mac and follow along with the other two pieces of software, and you'll still get a lot out of the workshop. We also have 2 PC workstations available for students who can't bring their own PC. About the Instructor Engin Arslan is a Senior Lighting Artist and a Technical Director in VFX industry. He holds a BS in Materials Engineering and a Post Graduate Certificate in Visual Effects. His latest credentials include films such as Mama, Silent Hill, The Thing and Tron. He is currently working on a TV Show called ‘Vikings’ and an upcoming feature film ‘The Mortal Instruments’. He develops pipeline tools for artists to ease their workflow and increase their efficiency using Python and PyQt and is fluent using 3ds Max, Maya and Houdini. http://www.enginarslan.com/ http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3810938/ Thursday, May 02, 2013 Toronto, ON tag:makezine.com,2006:event.3582 2013-03-07T23:41:15Z 2013-03-11T23:11:57Z mitchellfchan Workshop: Intro to Git Improve your programming productivity by learning the basics of Git! We'll talk about how to choose the right servo or stepper motor for the job. We'll discuss examples of control circuits such as the 555 timer that can be used to control the speed of a DC motor. We'll also discuss how to use the Arduino microcontroller to control speed and direction of DC motors, servomotors and stepper motors. We'll look at some of the motor controller boards that can be used with the Arduino. We'll talk a bit about Arduino motor control software. There'll be some hands on time to work with servo and stepper motors. BONUS: COMES WITH EXCITING MOTOR FUNPACK! This workshop costs more than our regular offerings because we give you some awesome and useful stuff to take home with you. Your registration fee includes the cost of: A stepper motor A stepper motor driver circuit, breadboard-ready A servo motor About the Instructor: Bill Gentles has worked for the past 30 years as a Biomedical Engineer. He has a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto. He has recently been shifting careers as he has discovered that what he really wanted to be when he grew up was an artist. He previously presented the motors workshop at Interaccess in 2011. We'll start by explaining how motors work, how to select the right kind of motor to do the job, and finally, how to mechanically connect the motor to whatever it is you want to move. Then we'll get our hands dirty, trying out some different motors and mechanical components like gears, cams and couplings. BONUS: COMES WITH EXCITING MOTOR FUNPACK! This week, we'll plug in a powerful Rhino add-on called Grasshopoper to create elaborate parametric forms. It's an increasingly popular tool among architects and designers, as an easy tool for creating shapes based on complicated math. Interface-wise, it sort of looks like Max or Pure Data, but for 3D modelling. From Grasshopper.com: "For designers who are exploring new shapes using generative algorithms, Grasshopper® is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3-D modeling tools. Unlike RhinoScript, Grasshopper requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but still allows designers to build form generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring." -From Grasshopper 3D.com MORE INFO: What prior experience do I need? You either took last week's Intro course, or you've used Rhino 3D before. Do I get to go home with something cool? Yes again! ...eventually. At the end of the evening, we'll round up your files and start printing them out. You can come into open studio the next week and we'll have your very own thing printed out and waiting for you! Cost of the printing material is included in your material fee. What do I need to bring? Bring your laptop, and have a trial version of Rhino pre-installed and Grasshopper as well. Remember that trial version you downloaded for last week's class here: http://www.rhino3d.com/download ? Hopefully you haven't used up the 25 saves that trigger the trial to expire. If you can't bring a laptop, no worries--just e-mail us beforehand and we may be able to get you a loaner. Is it OK to have a PC or Mac? PC only, this time! Sorry, Mac users, but Grasshopper only plugs in to the PC version of Rhino. What's that image credit? A 3d-printed model of Kisho Kurokawa's "Project for a Helix City", fabricated by John Dolci and modelled in Grasshopper. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Mani Mani (B.Arch. We'll be using Rhinoceros, a powerful 3D modelling software well-suited to creating models for fabrication, and the MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer. This class will be an introduction to computer modeling and rapid prototyping. At the end of the workshop we will use Interacces' 3D printer to print our models! NOTE: There is an optional follow-up workshop next week, covering advanced 3D forms with the Grashopper 3D plug-in. Check it out! MORE INFO: What prior experience do I need? None! If you've never done 3D modelling before, that's fine. And if you are familiar with another 3d modelling software like SketchUp, then you'll be ahead of the curve learning Rhino, which interfaces a lot differently. And you will probably really like Rhino. Do I get to go home with something cool? Yes! ...eventually. At the end of the evening, we'll round up your files and start printing them out. You can come into open studio the next week and we'll have your very own thing printed out and waiting for you! Cost of the printing material is included in your material fee. What do I need to bring? Bring your laptop, and have a trial version of Rhino pre-installed. You can download the trial version here: http://www.rhino3d.com/download . Please note that the trial version only allows you to save 25 times before asking you to pony up for the real version, so don't go too crazy before the workshop date. If you can't bring a laptop, no worries--just e-mail me beforehand and I'll get you a loaner. Is it OK to have a PC or Mac? Rhino is native to PCs, so you're in luck if you're a PC user. If you're on Mac, you're also in luck... the OSX version of Rhino is still in beta, so it's free. You'll just have to send McNeel your e-mail address to get a download link, and you 'll be part of their "beta testing" team. Woo-hoo! ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Mani Mani (B.Arch.
