This is really awesome! Good luck to everyone.

I made an iPod Nano model for the contest. It’s not real but it’s really detailed. (Little clips in the plugs, camera, etc.) If you have a makerbot you could make it and swap it with a real one as a prank or pretend to have a real one or something I guess. I’m just hoping I win cause my family could never afford a makerbot. Here’s the link: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2578 If I don’t win I hope someone deserving does. Good luck everyone!

Need a box for Revar’s excellent LCD Display and Keypad mod? Here’s a printable one!

This is a MakerBott printable experiment in using different $fn values in OpenSCAD to selectively control the “roughness” of the geometry on different parts. The $fn of the outside of the box is set to 3, while all the holes and openings are set to 60. This gives an overall edgy look to the part without sacrificing functional precision.

I really like the ability to combine a lo-fi trash-punk look yet maintain precision where it’s needed in a printable part. I will definitely be exploring this aesthetic further!

This is exactly what I would print with a maker bot. Its a modular mini fishing rod. The bright colors are used to show the different parts of the rod assembly. I decided to make it modular so it could be printed in pieces. I believe this could be quite a trendy printable tool.

Should an entry shackled with an All Rights Reserved license win the Cupcake?

      I’m just sayin’…

      Make: with Love!

      =ml=

      1. ben c bond says:

I definitely agree. This was my first time posting anything on thingiverse.com and wasn’t sure how to set the licensing. I’ve found it, now Mini Rod is Opensource. Mini Rods For Everyone!!!

        1. CafeT says:

Not only does the contest give no details on license, but Thingiverse doesn’t require such. 3D printers, even when open source, are presumably intended to enable people to manufacture things themselves. Some people need to make a living and can’t find a way to do that by giving away anything they design.

Don’t get me wrong, I like open design licenses. One of my posts, however, isn’t a useful object so much as an artistic design, which, not being a stock photo, doesn’t really need to be open source. It’s like writing a newspaper article or making a painting, though I wouldn’t claim to have such merit.

What I’d like to see is an iPhone case, maybe even with different colours of plastic and a back with e.g. the emblem of your favourite band on it or something. would be kinda cool and very personal. Only you will have an iPad case like this ! :)

    1. DLPlanes says:

I tried to do an iPhone case but its challenging, but instead I made this to other things that are for the iPhone.

I don’t have any fancy ideas, but I often find myself wishing I had a custom piece of plastic–a project enclosure, a shim, just random things. The Shapelock would be great for most of my purposes, actually…

I’d like to make a puzzle in the theme of M.C. Escher.

I’m in the process of building a RepRap, so I designed and printed this part to make use of a makerbot style plastruder on a RepRap.

  7. krux says:

And here is my design for a project box. At 100mm in length it’s at the maximum size that the makerbot can print. The box was designed to be wall mounted, though that isn’t strictly a requirement.

  9. John says:

    I have several ideas….so far.

#1: A clear bottle, with a full sized pear in it, and in the center of the pear is rectangle cut all the way through. In the rectangle is a ball and stick model of sucrose “floating” in the space.

#2: If at all possible to fab in metal, a single chain link around a 1/3″ diameter metal rod that has ends that are 2″ diameter; too big for the chain link to slip off.

#3: A 300 piece custom made Lego set.

#4: 10″ tall rocket, all fabbed. Only things unfabbed would be the parachute (obviously), engine, and recovery wadding.

    Thanks a TON MakerBot!!!

I could really use a few of these for my current project!

  12. RocketGuy says:

I really need to rev up my 3d chops, but my ideas include a custom case for various Arduino based projects, such as:

-EMF detector, with strain relieved antenna and bargraph under a thinwalled “display” top.

-Solar nightlights both indoor and outdoors, in various odd shapes and colors.

-And the obligatory brackets, holders, and odd objects that solve a specific problem that is impossible for a one-size-fits-some item.

    1. Tony says:

Because you don’t own it until you’ve voided the warranty.

Looks neat; think it would help prevent an RROD?

Where are the inlets and outlets?

Every Guitar Center should have one of these! I had to wait 2 weeks for a key for my guitar (the plastic piece at the top of the neck that holds the strings in place) to come in! It’s a stupid piece of plastic! This could work for any other plastic component on any instrument. Just have a huge library of all production guitars. If you need a component, BAM, it’s made right in store depending on your guitars serial.

This could work for any other store, but GC is the best example I can think of, and would have affected me directly.

My idea is to make a set of modules that could be assembled into various CNC machines. It is not necessarily a printable design but laser cut maybe.

Following the Open Structure http://www.openstructures.net/ guidelines the sliding modules would be 8cm by 8cm by 60cm and rotatable modules would be 8cm by 8cm by 8cm. Have powered and non-powered modules. Use multiple powered modules for more power in parallel or more distance in series.

The general idea is to sample the roughness of the bike paths in a city using an accelerometer mounted to the bike frame. The acceleration data along with GPS coordinates are logged by an arduino onto a memory card for later analysis and image generation using Processing. Ultimately, a colour-coded image of the bumpiness data can be generated and layed over a map of the city to see which paths and roads are smooth and which ones are bumpy. See the thingiverse page for more details.

The part I uploaded to thingiverse is a mount to fasten a sparkfun SEN-00252 board to a bicycle frame.

Here’s my idea for an ice mold that will make black-and-tan-making aides.

You fill the mold with water, freeze it and drop the ice washer into a pint glass. Then you fill the bottom of the glass with your first beer of choice (the more dense one) until it reaches the bottom of the washer, then fill the rest of the glass with your second beer of choice (the less dense one). When the thin ice piece melts you’ve got a perfect black and tan!

    1. Matt Mets says:

Ha! I did something similar in my quest to make a tan-and-black. I poured the less dense beer into a glass, put it in the freezer until a thin ice crust formed, then poured the denser liquid on last. Of course, when the ice melted, I was left with a mixed drink.

I can do a fair amount of woodworking and metalworking by hand, but at least several times a week I think of some small widget which would be great to fab in plastic. Most recently, I was think about a little stand for my tippy Android phone. I was also thinking about a broad, large s-hook to hang over the shower curtain rod, to hang towels and robes from. Printing these lacks the fun of making them by hand, but getting dimensions exact on the first try would be great.

    Hi,

I am looking at having a tooth extracted on Tuesday the 20th. After the extraction, I will need to have the “socket” for the implant heal for a number of months before getting a crown over the implant “post”. The whole procedure is very pricey, just to get a temporary plastic tooth alone costs a small fortune. I was going to leave it open but then I read about this competition. If I had a Makerbot then I could print my own tooth! So I fired up Blender and here is my best effort in Thingiverse:

The raised edge along the slot will (hopefully) keep the yarn on the loom until you are ready to cut it.

With a MakerBot 3D Printer, I would like to make a shift knob for my car, that could not be produced with common tools or a cnc machine.

Inspired by the design of a golfball. You see a ball within a ball that even spins around. You can see the second ball through the holes.
From the bottom it looks as there are four, twisted metall strings rising up from the ground. Even the thread within the strings is modelled in 3D.

This is a very expandable system … it can be multiple channels on a rotating drum with multiple drums with gearing between the vertical and horizontal systems you can add more and more to create a very large array of percussive triggers … I’m still tweaking the various different multiple systems.

Yes every part will be CupCake MakerBotable!

This is another of many entries to the makezine.com/go/makerbot contest …

See the bill of materials for quantities of each to MakerBot for the 1-Channel PPRM … then MakerBot the parts and start fitting them together into your new drumming/tapping machine as shown in the diagrams.

A rubber band (the spring) around the horizontal extensions out to the hammer pulls the hammer back to a stand-up position.

Program the drum set by sticking the programming pegs into the holes on the drum …

Set different objects in front of the hammer and crank the machine to hear the rhythm you created …

It’s a learning process to understand beats/measure … then with 2:1 gearing and a 2nd machine you can increase the resolution to 32 beats/measure.

BTW, if you store a few extra programming pins inside the drum you now have a second noise source … albeit not percussive but more like a rattle.

This is an array of 15 servos each individually operating a little laser pointer holder to swivel it back ‘n forth … the idea is to program the swivels to correspond to music you hear playing …

Sorry, the box cannot be made on a MakerBot so easily, but it could if it was cut-up like puzzle pieces and made as interlocking parts … which would be really neat. But you can see that a MakerBot is needed for the specialty pieces …

This is another of many entries to the makezine.com/go/makerbot contest …

I suggest laser cut the big flat parts from plastic or even cardboard. MakerBot the odd 3D pieces … then go buy a buttload of servos and laser pointers … and a small programmable µcontroller … write a simple program that allows you to enter notes ‘n beats to cause the laser pointers to swivel back ‘n forth to the music.

Tested only on small point and shooters, and a Flip camera – i have no idea how the joints will work with SLRs :-) – in any case USE AT OWN RISK!

I’ve always wanted to build this and hopefully I can if I win this MakerBot. I initially got the idea with those little trade show toys you get that allows you to ‘flip’ the cube inside out. They morph and can eventually show a total of 12 sides (6 outside and 6 stored inside). They are called magic cubes because they suddenly can make a picture seem like it appears out of nowhere.

So the twist is rather than put boring pictures on the 6 faces of the block, I am to store geometric shapes inside the hidden surfaces. You can think of it as 3 pyramids stuck together to form a sub cube part. Then 8 of those sub cube parts are put together to form the final product.

Here you can see the inside of the cube where I have joined all the side appropriately.
    http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2651

The actual file for one eighth the part is shown here:
    http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2650
*I started in the wrong quadrant so it only shows the back of the cube =(

Anyway, after you print this out with the MakerBot, you must stick 8 of them together with lots of colorful paper. My idea is to cover the outsides (initial state) with 3 solid colors. The insides (hidden sides) will be covered by shiny reflective sticky paper, you know, the kind that glimmers and you can pick from red diamond, gold diamond, silver, etc? So even if the paper isn’t sticky, you can glue it all together with spray adhesive.

You should note though that the stickers holding it together may not last long unless you use some sort of vinyl paper to endure the thousands of flippings this thing will likely see.

It’s a learning process to understand beats/measure … then with 2:1 gearing and a 2nd machine you can increase the resolution to 32 beats/measure.

BTW, if you store a few extra programming pins inside the drums and you’ll have a two more sources for noise … albeit not percussive but more like a rattles.

Adding a servo drive to the back will allow for continuous rotations. Adding a µController will allow you to vary timing turning the motor drive ON/OFF and different times … there’s almost no end to the expandability of this kit.

If you successfully make this with a 3D printer please send me the build-file and machine type so it can be uploaded here for others to use.

My idea for a design would be a series of levers and pulley’s arranged on the inside of a door. The levers and pulley’s could be printed with the cupcake and an arduino could control the whole system. I could have the arduino hooked to an rfid reader, and when the right card is read, the system of levers and pulley’s would be initiated and would turn the door knob on the inside of the door, which would allow the door to open freely. My submission for this competition is Enclosure Profiles. This design idea is intended to offer a simple way to use today’s modest-resolution desktop CNC tools to make an infinite variety of finished-looking electronic and mechanical project cases. Simple 2D profiles define the shape and features of enclosures which are printed-to-depth and finished with matching flat faceplates, surface-mount, flush, or recessed. Internal components, circuit boards, or chassis plates slide into inside surface grooves with the whole assembly held together by the screws or threaded rods holding the faceplates. By combining sections of profiles with compatible inside dimensions but different external perimeter features into stacks locked together with internal threaded rods, it becomes possible to make very elaborate cases with different exterior features, such as stand-off legs, heat sinks, and bolt-on flanges.

The concept was inspired by the design of classic radio designs like the Tivoli Model One and was first described in an article in my TMP2 wiki project as one of the example project concepts for the Open Source Everything Program, illustrating a possible manufactured product that could benefit from open design and global refinement. It was originally based on the use of aluminum with a series of standard extruded profiles being produced and cut to length like lumber for custom enclosures. Now, however, these new tools like the MakerBot offer us the option to print-to-depth instead, giving this concept even more flexibility and greater potential customization.

The particular design featured is for a fanless PC enclosure hosting a 170mm square Mini-ITX motherboard -which would make a great companion to the MakerBot. This is an example to illustrate the basic design concept and readers are encouraged to experiment freely with this to invent their own custom cases and features.

Unfortunately, the Thingverse site is having some difficulty rendering my uploaded preview images and they are only displaying as black boxes. The ‘original file’ links display the images fine so please look at these for the clear images. I’ve had a similar problem with uploading .jpg exports from the Mac version of Adobe Illustrator to web sites before but have never found an explanation or solution. Has anyone else encountered this? This is a MakerBotable kit to modify a RoboNova-1 and add another DOF so the legs can pronate and supanate while keeping the height of the RoboNova-1 very nearly the same as the original 30cm height … and this allows for the c.g. to remain lower for more stability. I’ll upgrade and fix these new servo horns within a day … they don’t have the splines on the inside bore just yet … I have to dig a real RoboNova-1 horn out for measurement … albiet I don’t have a caliper that small … I’ll only be able to eye-ball and guess.

This kit will make your RoboNova-1 slightly wider and thicker, but even side-by-side they appear very much the same size.

MMMMM Cupcakes! Ever wonder how the one armed man eats cupcakes? Now’s your chance to find out, see my design for a prosthetic ‘hand’. With a Cupcake CNC printer you can make your own prosthetic hand to practice eating cupcakes, dress up for Halloween, scare your mother or as I had envisioned provide prostheses to areas affective by war, disease, natural disasters or the like. Using a Cupcake CNC printer and a basic hand and wrist design will allow for inexpensive production in areas with little resources. The fact that the printer is portable and affordable allows for someone like myself (a prosthetic technician) to travel to places like Haiti and make be;low elbow prothesis on the spot for victims. The opportunities to assist people with low cost prosthesis are endless with the Cupcake CNC printer!!!
And if you don’t know and amputee or don’t want to scare your mother this design can be used as an in home grabber for hard to reach shelves (I just make my georgous tall wife do it for me) or as claws for your robot army as they take over the world. Well I’m just not that great w/ 3d modeling yet, but here are a couple of entry ideas that I had. I never got to building them, maybe someone else can.

Pegboard hoods – you could make them standard or custom to hold your odd shaped tools that never seem to hang just right.

Fan duct – You could scale the design up or down to fit whatever fan you had and increase its airflow.

Pill box – Monday through Friday or Tuesday and Saturday, print whatever combo you want with hinged lids of course.

4″x4″ organizer – 4 2″x2″ divided squares about 1″ tall to hold and organize various screws while working on projects

Seatbelt clip – to clip the sholder strap to the lapbelt and allow you to adjust the shoulder strap to hit farther to your left. For cars where the shoulder strap rubs your neck.

It is a concept for establishments such as care homes or residential homes – anywhere where privacy is required but a lock is not always suitable. Rather than using a lock or hard to see engaged indicator it shows a light which can be seen discreetly from a distance away.

This is my entry for the Make/MakerBot give away. It was made using 3ds Max. My entry it is more an example of what I can do with 3d modeling than what I would use a MakerBot for. I have several things that I would use a 3d printer for. the main one would be to print robot parts that i design as I have a very hard time finding anything that would be as flexible and durable as the prints would be. As I am home schooled I have a lot of time to follow my interests and I think that a MakerBot would be great for me.

These are a pair of robot wheels. When printed at 40mm they will fit a 2mm shaft – perfect size for motor shafts. I have optimized this design to use a minimum amount of printing material and also reduce the dynamic energy required to drive the wheel. I have learned that the elastics used to hold broccoli together make for great traction.

As a Teacher, every project i work on, whether be my own design or someone elses that has been featured on your site, i.e. Rick’s Compressed Air Rocket Launcher. Has had the ability to be brought into the classroom to teach and aid the students with their studies. Rick’s Rocket launcher helps to teach aerodynamics, projectile motion, etc.

My designs have followed this example.

Electronics are always so small and always hard to demonstrate in a classroom of at least 25 students.
making the parts larger and be able to stick onto a whiteboard via the slot for magnets to be inserted to show kids how electronics work is my goal. The devices are going to sit flush on the whiteboard, and only their frontal 3D shape has been modelled.

With a Cupcake 3D Printer i will be able to print these designs and utilise them in a classroom setting hopefully encouraging future hobbyist’s and engineers to flourish.

    Devices are to include

    -Resistor

    -Diode

    -Electrolyitic Capacitor

I’ve had several ideas, many of which would require improvements to the MakerBot. This fits within the rules as the first one asks for something I would “like to see printed on a MakerBot CupCake CNC,” not necessarily something currently feasible. :)

    1. Easy production of sculptures (already done, of course).
    2. Direct printing of robot chassis parts instead of, e.g., going to laser cutting.
    3. Printing of electronic components using conductive second materials (wires and capacitors being the easiest, resistors, diodes, and transistors being eventual goals). Embedded electronics could lead to waterproofing and protection like in Shape Deposition Manufacturing (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~sdm/). Printable motors, anyone?
    4. Prototyping of musical instruments, including using an audio sample feedback loop to keep modifying body design until certain frequency characteristics are achieved. Needs machine learning work to choose next iteration.
    5. Very thin objects and small holes (resolution increase necessary).
    6. Laying down of lithographic materials like silicon, silicon dioxide, and piezoelectrics.
    7. Cells and growth factors!
    8. Spider silk spinning machine? Transgenic bacteria grow the proteins, and the small holes above allow us to print parts.
    9. Back to the nearer future: Off-center centers of gravity for bouncy balls (silicone?).
    10. New tupperware/food containers (I always lose the lids, not sure how though).

I probably should have posted 10 times if not, but I’m assuming each person’s considered once anyway. Also, regardless of how good my ideas are with respect to those of others, I would love to see developments enabling them. These are essentially feature requests!

OK, sorry for the long name,

Basically this is a lockable pivot joint intended to be used (with about 5 brothers) in making a set of helping hands to hold circuit boards etc.

It has a ball at one end and socket at the other with a tightening nut to fix the joint in place. This means these can attached to each other to form pose-able armatures.

    Hi,

I thought I’d post this little note … I’ve been using/learning SolidWorks for almost a year now … practicing on my own at home watching YouTube videos of “How To” etc… But I must say, this contest has driven me to greater detail than ever learning SolidWorks and now realizing how I must invert (unless I an figure out how to rotate axis in SW) all my sketches in SolidWorks … that is to have the SW back as the bottom and drill negatively for the MakerBot build-up. Basically, the 3D axis in SolidWorks differs by 90° than the files created for MakerBot and rather than positive numbers I need to use negative numbers to build the sketch.

I hope somebody can tell me how to either rotate the axis in the MakerBot programs to align with SolidWorks or vice-versa.

Anyway, this contest has been fun … I figure at best I have a 25% chance of winning … but I still have my toes crossed …

It’s been a great challenge to come up with ideas for things here and crank’em out … but very educational.

Got an itch you can’t reach with the makerbot now you can. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2878

A funny thing made me come up with this, you see i have an itch to win the makerbot giveaway competition, last night i was working late on some designs in blender and low and behold my mental itch turned into a physical one, i guess what you think does find away to manifest itself, or it could have been the candy bar, anyway it was dead center in my back just out of reach of my hands. Uureka, i had an epiphany. The only way to get to it was to kill two bird with one stone, i had to take care of my mental itch by winning the competition by designing a model that could actually scratch my physical itch. *Genius*,

I then realize this has the ability to tear the fabric of the universe. You see i have an itch to win the makerbot competition, which then turned into a real itch i could not reach, so i designed the Back Scratcher to win the makerbot competition, but if i win the competition then the itch would never have manifested itself into a real itch meaning i never would have created the Back Scratcher meaning i could not have won the makerbot competition and then “boom”**(….) the fabric of the universe gets ripped. Anyway i still got an itch and i cant reach it and would be much obliged if you picked me, so i could then scratch it, its irritating…, it cant be as bad as a tear in the space time continuum right?

“Makerbot’s new ability, it can even tear the space time continuum” with just a back scratcher.

I am very interested in acquiring a Makerbot mainly for rapid prototyping purposes. I would use it to produce gears, structural supports, and casings for in-house robotics and electronics projects. It would be a great boon in my situation as I live in a rural area where many of these things must be ordered from a large distance away if I am unable to produce them myself, which introduces increased costs, part-selection difficulties, and lots of waiting time into many projects. I would also use it to produce gifts, toys, and other static tools and objects for myself and other people I know. Finally, I am very interested in the RepRap project as well, and have a few like-minded friends who would also be interested to get their hands on some of the Darwin or Mendel parts I could print with a CupCake ‘bot.

This is a slug barrier designed to keep bugs, mainly slugs, from eating your vegetable. There are 3 parts to this barrier. The trough, the “Hanover Slug Fence”, and the spikes. The trough is the main barrier because it can be filled with salt or beer. Beer will attract the slugs and they drown in it. Salt will keep slugs away due to dessication upon contact. The “Hanover Slug Fence” keeps slugs from climbing over as well as keeps water out of the trough. The spikes cut slugs. In actual product, the spikes would be more dense like mesh wire. I imagine the trough is all that is necessary and the other measures are superfluous. This is all theory and prototyping has not begun yet. Please comment. Thanks.

The idea is that trumpet mouthpieces are expensive, so if you want to experiment with different types to get a different sound and playability, you have to be very rich. There are many many different types of mouthpieces, so I wanted to make a parametric way to create mouthpieces. I came up with the design I posted to Thingiverse. It is an openSCAD file.
So far I have created versions of the Marcinkiewicz 4/7c and 3/5c mouthpieces. I also created a version of the Bach 3C mouthpiece.

I had an idea for something that would be awesome to print on a Makerbot.
The idea is an RC plane. It would be built in 8 parts. The wings would each be 2 parts. The body of the plane would be in 2 parts that would join in the center. The rudder would also be a separate part. You could even print the rotor. The control surface for the rudder would be a piece of cardboard.

The reason for building in separate parts is to have long wings and to not have any un-build-able overhangs.

Unfortunately, I really do not have the CAD design kung-fu to design this myself.

I’m not sure if the design would fly because of all the weight of the plastic, but its worth a try.

    Here’s a 2D mock up of the design: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49325300@N07/4579995045/

    Gondola: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2952

The first is a lodge that the ball goes into and is kicked onto the second floor where it is locked for multiball

The second is a gondola that will carry the ball up the machine to the top of the mountain and send the ball down a ski jump.

    Thanks for the contest

My entry is a dremel based milling machine, printable on a makerbot without a heated build platform (although it certainly helps). It uses dovetail slides for the axises. So far, I’ve only printed part of the x&y stages, but the x axis dovetail slide moves smoothly and without wobble, even though the print warped a bit. This bodes well for the rest of the axises, and I think it will be good enough to machine aluminum.

This is an OpenSCAD script to generate shapes for NEMA rack rails based on user supplied parameters. It was created with 3D printing in mind, but should be usable with CNC.

By editing the .scad file, you can render left rails, right rails, or both, side-by-side; you can turn on or off top and bottom “end caps”, with or without mounting holes. The code is commented, so it shouldn’t be difficult to add features.

I have a number of small (1U-3U), light-weight rack-mount devices but wanted to be able to mount them in more convenient places than a standard rack. My first target is to hang a 3U GPS faceplate under the shelf above my monitor. While the GPS behind the faceplate is gone, what remains is a 4×40 textual LCD and ten input buttons that I drive with LCDproc. I’ve also considered using these rails as the front corners of a small table-top enclosure.

This is a pair of STL files generated by an OpenSCAD script that parametrically generates a printable case for the prototype Makerbot Watch (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1254).

I was lucky enough to get one of the prototype watches and haven’t been able to find the time to lasercut the sample case. Since I’ve been brushing up on my OpenSCAD skills, I thought this would be educational as well as useful.

Print one of the STL files, then use the DXF file from the Makerbot Watch page and cut out a 3mm-thick face from the right-most shape in the file and bolt them together with M4 hardware. Alternately, it should be possible to use washers under the M4 bolts to grab the edges of the PCB.
