IR thermometers allow you to measure the temperature of objects without actually coming in contact with them.  This is why they’re called noncontact thermometers. They’re ideal for basic chores like measuring the temperature for car engines, cooking surfaces, refrigerators, heaters and streams and lakes.  They also have many scientific applications.
