Thinglink is an open database where makers can register and print out unique identifiers for their creations. Increasingly, web users find products (books, music, web pages) based on other people's recommendations. Recommendation systems like Amazon, Last.fm, and Delicious rely on unique identifiers (ISBNs, Amazon Identification Numbers, Music Brainz IDs, URLs) that make it possible to point to products online. Many small producers, especially in developing countries, do not have access to create unique identifiers, and therefore, their products are not equally recommendable online. The same applies to art, design, and craft projects. Yet, online recommendation systems could benefit these makers the most. With Thinglink, I hope to explore how makers would use unique identifiers to identify their work, and what kind of services the unique IDs would enable.
