Location: DIY Theatre

Michael W. Dean will show his documentary film "DIY or DIE: How to Survive as an Independent Artist." A discussion will follow.

He writes: "I learned filmmaking to create this film, rather than becoming a filmmaker first and deciding later what to make a film about. I had an idea that I felt needed expressing, and none of the mediums I already knew were fit to do it well, so I learned a new medium to get it done.

I look at DIY as a means, rather than an end. I look it as a way of getting things done, rather than as a self-definition. I do music, make records, make films, write books, get them published, but I don’t define myself as a musician, a writer or a filmmaker. I just think of myself as a guy who does stuff, has something to say, and needs to keep busy. And I’ve taught myself several mediums, so when I get an idea, I’m not limited in how I execute it. I can chose the best medium to fit the idea."
