Machine Science: Putting the "C" in Creativity
Type: Maker Table/Exhibit
Program Area:
Electronics
Day/Time: Saturday and Sunday 12:00 AM
Location: Fiesta Hall
Machine Science will display a number of sophisticated electronic projects, built with the companys breadboard-based microcontroller platform and on-line programming environment.Example projects include:
- programmable, motorized Etch-A-Sketch
- optically controlled MIDI drum machine
- spinning persistence-of-vision display
- LED and push button memory game
- musical accelerometer
We will show you how to build creative projects like these using inexpensive, off-the-shelf electronic components and our easy-to-use on-line guides and programming environment. Teachers and students looking for classroom-ready resources will find our display particularly interesting no experience with programming is necessary.

Machine Science is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting hands-on engineering education for students at the middle school, high school, and unversity level. We have developed a suite of project kits and innovative on-line resources that introduce students to the fundamentals of electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering, using real-world parts and materials. Machine Science projects provide engaging entry points for younger students and grow rapidly in sophistication to meet the learning needs of high school and university students. Our robust and highly extensible kits and on-line resources have been put to a range of usesas a curriculum for after-school engineering programs in urban public schools, as a primer on C programming for FIRST Robotics teams, and as the autonomous control platform for undergraduate design competitions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
