Lapdancer
LapdancerFeaturing Sean Lowry in the Ticket Booth
August 13 - September 6, 2008
Opening reception: Wednesday, August 13, 6-9 PM
Gallery Hours: Wednesdays - Saturdays, 1-6 PM
In Lapdancer, Lowry alters existing or established connections between sound and vision to profoundly affect perception and interpretation. This video work consists of a composite of short and seemingly disparate audiovisual sequences that aim to elucidate the influence of sound on visually centered cultural formations. While some sequences employ production devices that might typically support narrative structures (which are subsequently stripped away), other sequences borrow from art history, conceptualism, advertising, or popular music to uncanny or comic affect. 'Musical' timing is substituted with visually determined cues. Lapdancer uses the language of reconstructive sampling to acknowledge a rejection of aspirations toward originality, and the conflicting desire to create. This work engages with the tension between the value of 'choosing' and the idea of 'making' as an unresolved issue, while attempting to find poetry that begins rather than ends in ironic estrangement.
