I've stopped buying newspapers. I read them on a Palm Vx running AvantGo. This old grayscale palmtop's screen has extremely good contrast and it's reflective. That means that reading it is like reading a book if there's enough light to read a book, there's enough for the Palm Vx.
The AvantGo software is free if you download 3 MB of newspapers and magazines at a time. Or you can pay $15 a year to get 8MB of downloads. All you need to do is sync your Palm every morning for the current New York Times, Guardian, or whatever paper you've chosen, and you're ready for your subway commute.
Available online at the vendor's site.
