It's inevitable: at least once a day you're going to have to ruin someone else's handiwork. You've got to cut some rope, open a packing box, delicately cut a printed circuit board trace, and to do all of these things and more, you'll need a knife. My knife of choice is the Spyderco Endura. Unless I'm traveling by air, this thing is always in my pocket.
Why Spyderco? Of the bewildering array of knife manufacturers, they've always merged high concept with low tech. Spyderco knives offer easy one-handed opening thanks to the hole in the blade.
In the knife world, where claims of "the official knife of the Navy SEALS" are used to push Rambo-sized bayonets and barely legal "automatic" knives, the Endura is a model of simplicity. The handle is tough but lightweight fiberglass-reinforced nylon, pebbled so your grip won't slip. The handiest form of the blade is half-serrated and half-plain. The serrations might look mean, but they're quite handy the serrated half is nearest the handle, for tougher cutting jobs. If you're trapped in a car, this thing can saw through seat belt webbing. The tip end is plain edged, for more delicate work, or for slicing up cheese at a picnic.
Not counting the clip, the Endura is only 2" thick, with a blade almost four inches long. If the Endura looks like too much knife for you, try its little brother, the Delica model.

i own three different spyderco knives, having gotten my first one around 1990 or 1991. they are amazing, durable knives, and are probably the one tool that i keep with me at all times.Posted by jasonzmoore on July 12, 2006 at 21:45:43 Pacific Time
- 2" thick?

Is that right? Two inches (not counting pocket clip) seems awfully think for a single bladed knife, and probably too thick for easy pocketing.Posted by strunkl on July 13, 2006 at 09:37:43 Pacific Time

the knife is 2" wide not thick. there is a new edition of this knife called the
endura 4. It is a better knife than the version shown. and you can find the knife at new graham knives for $46 plus shipping.

- good or cheap

constantly in the back of my mind. "buy the right tool the first time, own it for life"
Buy cheap junk, and buy it over and over.
USUALLY. Except for knives, and flashlights, which I seem to lose constantly. I have no clue where the flashlights go. Seriously. Maybe the underpants gnomes are taking them, or maybe they are in a corner of my shop having a party with all the socks my dryer seems to eat.
But knives? I know where they go. I cut something, set them down for "just a second" come back 3 days later, and they've vanished.
Or I drop them. usually into deep, dark, hard to reach places, probably inhabited by giant spiders.
So after I lost my 2nd "high buck" knife, a pal suggested the cheap knockoffs. Sure, quality is not there. But when you lose a $2 knockoff? You do not feel as bad.
Another toy I've recently started playing with is the Harbor Freight razor blade specials.

If you have not seen one of these, I will highly recommend.
Good luck.Posted by cstatman on September 04, 2006 at 15:38:26 Pacific Time
- personally i prefer gerber

the gerber ez out is a ~20$ very comperable knife, that i have found to be quite good at holding an edge, with some of the most agressive, yet non binding serrations out there. the lil rubber bit on the handle makes it much more stable being held in the teeth for a moment with hands full while adjusting what you're cutting.Posted by unjustgod on November 08, 2006 at 11:58:38 Pacific Time
