Combine an Arduino with a proximity sensor, and make an obnoxious device to discourage cats and other fur-shedding pets from jumping on beds and couches. This project will also introduce you to the SPDT relay, a fundamental component of hobbyist electronics projects.

Love the couch guardian idea. We have four cats, one of whom is getting old and sometimes forgets where the litter tray is – so it could be good for moving her on too.
Beyond that though, something this simple could be used in passive security or monitoring applications: A proximity sensor that turns on solar powered Christmas lights on your fence-line or house exterior when someone is near, or triggers a sound file of some kind to play. Or a sensor that turns on a security camera.
Love this project. My cat is a bit immune to noise…I have a spray bottle that I squirt him with to keep his dirty paws off the kitchen counter. Any ideas on an way to automate and aim the squirt bottle at him? Some sort of motion tracking?
