I can’t wait to get some time to hack up GPS project with Google’s new satellite photos for Google maps. Here’s the regular map of O’Reilly HQ and here’s the satellite photo version. Using this application from Glen Murphy, a high speed wireless connection like an EVDO card and a GPS unit, you could easily make a real-time satellite photo GPS unit for your car. You could also just hook this up to your laptop and walk around looking for Wifi too.

Why is the free satellite imagery on Google Maps more recent than the imagery I pay for on Google-owned Keyhole?
I like the way the street names on Google Maps stay put. The way they float around and sloppily turn corners on Yahoo! Maps and Mapquest is pretty irritating.
Is there a solution for offline browsing of the map yet?
If you like this, you should check out World Wind, by NASA, but be warned: it takes some serious computing power and alot of bandwidth to make it worth it.
