KnoppiXMAME

Images-2-1 KnoppiXMAME is a bootable CD/DVD image with hardware automatic probing and configuration for playing MAME games. No games are included, but they can be added to the ISO image, as well as new versions of X-MAME, gxmame, and the Linux kernel. If you’re interested in carrying around a CD that can boot just about any computer and turn it in to a retro arcade machine, check this out. Link.

It seems the big question here is how to pull the ISO apart, add the ROMs, put it all back together and burn a boot CD. If anyone has a link to describe this process under Windows (maybe using Nero and WinRAR) I would greatly appreciate it.

P.S. I figured most of it out, but I can’t find boot.img in the ISO.

You don’t need to pull the ISO apart- there is an included GUI tool to rebuild a new ISO with your ROMS. At the boot prompt, type ‘knoppix addroms’. The tool will launch, and then choose ‘audit games’ from the file menu. It will add all the ROMS that you have in a /ROMS folder on your hard drive. Then, close out of the tool and you will be prompted for the drive on which you want your ISO to be built. That said, I don’t believe from what I’ve seen that writing to NTFS drives is supported yet.

Thanks for the info. I knew I could count on you guys!

I found out that if you press F1 at the boot: prompt, it gives you some advice about addroms. I hadn’t caught on to the fact that the roms dir has to be /roms (in lowercase and at the root of the drive) in order for it to be found automatically by “audit games”. The F1 message also states that NTFS is supported by the “audit games” function, but I cannot verify this.

I have yet to burn the new ISO, but I have played some games using the original ISO CD and ROM files on my FAT32 harddrive.

One problem remains: whenever I use DGA Fullscreen mode, I get a diagonal, banded display that is unusable. It works fine with WinMAME. Any advice about this one? TIA -s

I’ve been trying to sort this for ages with no luck, I’ve tried the
Knoppix addroms which works to a point but doesn’t create the iso. I’ve created a fat partition as it doesn’t get NTFS, it either says iso created but there isn’t one or sticks at squashing rootsquash. So, I downloaded magic iso, added the roms but when I create the new iso, burn it to disc I get a boot error, unable to find kernel.

    Any help pleeeeaaaasse!?
