Build-a-bear – be aware….

Images-137
I’ve always thought the Build-a-Bear stores in malls are kinda neat, the kids can build their own Teddy bears they way the want. I even made one once as a present. What I didn’t know- it seems it’s not so clear is what happens to the information the kids type in the computer terminal to get their bear birth certificates. The “opt in” preference apparently is pre-checked. The SF Chronicle has a story about this. The bears are cool, just watch the kids and don’t have them put their personal info at the end. Might be a good way to teach them about “opting out” [via] Link.

Build A Bear Workshop has taken every precaution to prevent anyone from being able to gain access to the registration information. Store employees are not allowed to see the childs information, the parents or alult that brought them in, or sibling are the only ones other than the child able to fill out the “birth certificate” info, when personal info is submitted. This info is used in case the child’s “friend” is lost and is returned to BABW where a special dept. will match the ID tag inside the “friend” to the “birth certificate” and return it to the child. There were over 4000 “friends” returned to children who lost them. Thanks, A BABW Bear Builder

I was very surprised how much personal info we were asked for at Build-A-Bear Workshop. I had my child fill in first name, but typed in the just the initial of the last name and left all the address and other fields requesting personal info blank. When we registered online so the kids could play in the virtual community, some of the terms seemed a bit troublesome, any info you submit online is theirs to own, rent, sell, et cetera, it wasn’t clear to me if that included email addresses as well. I agree — it is a fun concept, just be aware and be cautious.
