Exploratorium in San Francisco…

TactilepicPaul writes “You must have a million comments about the Exploratorium, but this place is the ULTIMATE Makers utopia. These are profesional makers who create exhibits from old, new, rare, common, bizarre, etc. objects and products. There is an entire set of exhibits made from Mac SE computers, old PCs, spectrum analyzers, etc…It’s Science at its “Makiest”.” Link. You can also check out the online exhibits here.

I love the Exploratorium! Definitely my favorite museum as a kid…

So I click the “Suggest a Site” button on the Make Blog and a day later, the Associate Editor of Make posts it to the blog! That’s cool, thank you Phillip! If anybody wants to see a few pictures of the incredible exhibits, we posted a few on our blog in the topic Exploring the Exploratorium.

I love the Exploratorium and I agree that it’s an awesome ‘Makers’ place. Unfortunately, they’ve hardly ‘Made’ anything new in the 20 years of me going there. I’ve thought about volunteering as an exhibit designer because they are REALLY in need of new exhibits and I have plenty of ideas.

One of the best exhibits they ever had was a glass room you go into with a bunch of silly-looking guitar-shaped instruments with buttons along the fretboard, and everyone would sort of jam together, but they removed that years ago. Still, the place is very huge and jam-packed with all sorts of fascinating things that should make for a pleasant evening for everyone of all ages. Also, watch out as you blink as you might see a giant eye peering at you.

The exploratorium is great! We were there over thanksgiving break and they had the large cloud chamber running. One of my most favorites!

I have recently gotten involved with my local science center and am on a design team to design a small wind tunnnel exhibit. It’s a lot of fun and I encourage you to seek out your local science/children’s museum and volunteer your time.

If anyone is interested, http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/ has a few hundred “Science Snacks,” actually scaled down, at-home versions of many exhibits. The pages are all a little cumbersome, though (generated years ago in Claris Homepage)…if you’d like to use newer, faster, better Science Snack pages (and help me out a little), please check out my new standards-compliant (I hope) versions at http://www.exo.net/~da/snacks/ and then send me lots of delicious feedback I can claim to stay on top of while I put off finishing the transition to the new pages so I can pass my classes.

And rabit: Exhibits are cycled on and off the floor regularly, and new exhibits are frequently added to the pool (now somewhere between 650 and 700 exhibits, AFAIK). And I can totally prove it by hitting anyone with 100,000 volts from our little Van de Graaff generator (long-dead, ressurected summer before last).

That said, rabit if you (or anyone else) want to volunteer your time and ideas, please do. We can always use the help!
