A PC solderless power supply for experimenters

ElectDavid writes “This is a PC Case mod that installs four binding posts that are linked to the PC’s power supply into an empty drive bay so that you can use it as a bench 5V or 12V power supply……..especially useful if you’re messing around with PIC programming, etc.” This is an excellent mod, this could make a great accessory for Maker types too if it were to go in production (or just make one with this how to). Am I the only one who thinks this should have a few fuses, just for logevity of my motherboard’s sake?

Computer Power supplies tend to have a trip switch in case you accedently cross power with ground. This will instantly shut your computer down. I wouldn’t suggest using this for expeirmenting / projects for that reason alone.

Looks like the PC has to be turned on to use the supply. Switching supplies need a load to stay on. If a load resistor was added, this could make a nice bench supply
