MAKE Flickr photo pool member caffeineslinger has a photo set of balloons popping via a high speed strobe flash photography from MAKE volume 04 – Link.
Homemade Strobe Photography by Tom Anderson, Wendell Anderson. Take pictures of popping balloons, breaking glass, and water droplets. MAKE 04 – Page 102.
More High-Speed Photos – With so many great photos to choose from, we had a hard time deciding which ones to put in MAKE 04. Here’s some more that we loved, but couldn’t fit into the magazine – Link.

Hmm, I had to re-read this article after seeing this blog post: I’m confused on what I am building (I’m sufficiently experienced that I sometimes read the directions before doing of the steps). I see the part about modding the camera, no big deal there: the flash controller looks a little more complicated (but why oh why isn’t it designed to fit into an Altoids tin, the canonical MAKE project box?).
What I would like to be able to do is use the flash controller w/ an existing (digital or film)camera. Hummingbirds are out, in my neck of the woods, and strobe photography is the only way to really see them.
