    I’ve done much the same with a Basic Stamp II and a Memsic 2125 Dual-axis Accelerometer module from Parallax having the integrated third axis is nice in that it is possible to improve the calabration of the chip orientation and compensate out the force of gravity.

    Sparkfun has several additional units as well.

    Keep in mind that the trick with these units is factoring out the pull of gravity and motion of the sensor package. This is known as the strap-down IMU problem and it is not trivial.
