Researchers at Tohoku University have developed a working prototype of what they are calling the world’s smallest gas turbine engine, a palm-sized motor they hope will one day be used to power autonomous robots and serve as a portable engine for personal transportation devices.

    Alan Epstein at MIT has a group that’s been working at a MEMS gas turbine on a chip. At ~4mm wide, it’s a whole lot smaller.

    I remembered that same article about the MIT guys when I saw this. However, as gosh_d’s first link states, they have all of the pieces that work individually, but it said their biggest challenge still lay ahead in getting them all working together. Maybe that’s the difference, maybe this one is the smallest WORKING gas turbine engine.
