Researchers at Tohoku University have developed a working prototype of what they are calling the world’s smallest gas turbine engine, a palm-sized motor they hope will one day be used to power autonomous robots and serve as a portable engine for personal transportation devices.

Alan Epstein at MIT has a group that’s been working at a MEMS gas turbine on a chip. At ~4mm wide, it’s a whole lot smaller.

I remembered that same article about the MIT guys when I saw this. However, as gosh_d’s first link states, they have all of the pieces that work individually, but it said their biggest challenge still lay ahead in getting them all working together.
