This is an interesting collection of human powered boats I came across today. I couldn’t find it searching the make blog archives, but I may have missed it getting posted already. Hopefully not. Thanks Make!

There is a race (called Kinetics) in the Boulder Reservoir where people have to build human powered vehicles to race in both water and on land. It’s a great time, and there is a music festival too! (more pics here)

My friends and I came up with the idea of a human powered wheel to “walk” on water. I helped with the design and initial construction, but wasn’t there for its completion or testing. It did work, though I am told it had a definite top speed that no amount of extra effort seemed to affect.

Here’s a picture of The Rolling-O in action.

For a more enlightened approach, check out ForwardFace.com. These folks strive to make human-powered boats that allow the person to face in the direction of travel. Cool.

I have seen this site for the past 4-5 years. I would love to build a peddled powered canoe/kayak and go from San Diego to Hawaii and then to the South Pacific/ Micronesia area. I got the the bug when I rode Mountainbike from Las Cruces, NM to Seattle in 1988 living off my boomerang hobby because I didn’t have the money to support my ride. I might die in the process, but what a way to go! And who knows.. I might actually make it!
