Convert a DVD-R drive in to a lab scanner (or…microimmunoanalysis on standard compact discs to determine low abundant compounds) – it’s pretty amazing, you put the samples on the CDR and use the laser to analyze them. At first glance this is not dissimilar to a system that was demonstrated to my group at work. The difference is that their system cost about as much as a car with the special disks running about $200 each.
Those “special” disks are probably so expensive because they contain the entire LotR trilogy with all extended features :)
Either that or they were made by Aliens and then kept in a hermetically sealed Mayonnaise Jar on Funk and Wagnal’s front porch….
