Build a battery meter, show your friends that alkalines aren’t “dead” yet

Even though alkaline batteries are slowly disappearing in exchange for the re-chargeable nickel metal hydride and lithium in most consumer electronic devices, there are still a few people who use them. Here’s a nice project to test the strength of the remaining AA batteries you have lying around your house if you can’t find your multimeter amid the clutter.

Don’t be fooled — it’s not just for alkalines.

I don’t always keep my collection of NiMH cells perfectly sorted, so I use the meter to double-check which cells are fresh, which are depleted and need a trip to the charger, and which have been on the shelf long enough to need topping off.

Handy as the dickens, and a lot more specific (especially across different battery chemistries) than the red / yellow / green analog battery meters you can buy at Radio Shack.

In what universe are alkaline batteries disappearing? Certainly not this one.
