Makers you’re in for a real treat, here are the photos from our visit to Gakken. I shot some video and I’ll put those up once there’s a fast connection or later next week.
I can’t promise anything yet, but we will be trying very hard to arrange for the MAKE store to carry some of the much sought after Gakken kits!
Here’s a bit about them… (from Concept puzzles)
Gakken Co., Ltd. was founded as a publishing company in Tokyo in 1946. Since then the company has grown to become Japan’s leading educational publisher with a staff of over 1200 employees and with sales of 821 billion Yen per year (about 6.5 billion USD).
Today, Gakken’s main business is in educational books and magazines as well as in other educational related products for nursery and school children. The company is well known to everyone in Japan from their kindergarten and school days. Illustrated text books, encyclopaedias in Japanese and in English, science books, picture books for infants and elementary students, educational magazines for high school students, school guides, child care, nursing and teacher training material are just part of the wide range of publications offered by Gakken.

just a suggestion:
maybe you could try not to put so many pictures on the main page for a single post, put a link. It takes up a lot of real estate and you cant have as many posts and it’s kind of annoying to scroll past.

Ok I’m going to have to go to Japan now and get me some of that geeky goodness.
I started a Flickr group called Otona No Kagaku Science Kits for people to show off the kits they have built. These are just about the coolest ‘mooks’ that I have ever come across. On my next trip the Gakken store is a must see. Your job has some pretty darn fine perks!
Gakken Co. also publishes at least one book on mechanical automata. I cannot read the title (in Japanese), but it’s got some great photos and drawings of automata and Karakuri.

I agree- the comments are some of my favorite parts, and with a HUGE post, one loses track of pictures and ideas in the beginning.
But then again, I believe PT is working from overseas, so some slack allowed ;)
