HOW TO – Make video flipbooks with AfterEffects

Vid Flipbook

Bennett sent us this how-to on making flipbooks from video –

I can’t quite remember how I got the idea, but I thought it would be fun to create some flipbooks based off of video I had shot. The challenge was to be able to effeciently process the frames from a 3-5 second clip, have them printed by a photography shop, and assemble them as easily as possible.

After some testing, I created a template within After Effects that takes a video as input, and through some expressions I wrote, outputs a sequence of JPGs – each with four video frames and crop markings per 4×6 print

Hit up the site for some nice video of the resulting books – Handmade Flipbooks

  1. This really should be considered for inclusion in MAKE magazine. For those of us non-Mac savvy people, it’d be great to have an alternative as well. Please consider showing the drilling and leather binding, too. Great work.

  2. Well, I guess we all have our favorites hammers but Quicktime can output video as a sequence of images, sos you know…

  3. Looks like a great Christmas gift to grandparents of baby’s first steps. I just came across this company called TruAction Flix. They have a patented flipbook that shows 4 clips instead of your usual 2…. The clip they have on their web site has Carl Edwards crashing and doing a back flip!! Totally Kool! http://www.truactionflix.com
