I could see people using these in those crazy iPhone launch lines… via Eyebeam. The maker writes –

The Vertical Bed is an apparatus that allows humans, who have a cumbersome tendency to lapse into unconsciousness, to do so without sitting or lying down. This weekend, starting at 6 am on Saturday the 13th, I will engage in slumber in the standing position, incognito, in the public sphere, on the street. I will do this every four hours, at 6, 10, and 2, for forty minutes at a time, in a polyphasic sleep schedule. I will become architecture, absorbing the vertical nature of the city. If it works, apartments will cease to be necessary, the distinction between inside and outside, day and night, rest and activity will erode. Join me in my continuing professionalization of sleep at any time during the weekend.

This will part of Conflux..

This device…which keeps you upright for supposedly long periods of time…could possibly lead to suspension trauma… I’d not use something like this… Death is not a really good tradeoff for having the first iWhatever.

    The question is: why?
It’s so good to sleep in a comfortable bed at home…

I predict a lot of standing around answering questions and very little sleep actually happening. You’re going to need to be extremely sleep-deprived or some powerful pharmaceuticals to get to where you can sleep standing up. Good luck!

i’ve fallen asleep standing up lots of times. and i wasnt sleep deprived either. when there is nothing (and i mean nothing) at your crappy bar job and it’s kind of cold. you cross your arms tight and lean against the back bar and wtch tv. all of a sudden 20 minuted has gone by and you are warmer from a short dream.
