    I tried over the years techniques similar to the one posted and never got a very useful finish on cast iron. I now use, instead, the technique linked below which uses a much higher temperature and is best performed on a windy day with all the kitchen windows open. It produces a nice finish along with smoky indications that the process is proceeding.
