Quick fix for a stripped lens mount

lensMountQuickFix_cc.jpg
From the MAKE Flickr pool

I was particularly non-plussed upon discovering my vidcam’s lens thread had been stripped while using an exceptionally cheap wide angle attachment. Rather than sending it in for repairs I pondered the options – epoxy? tape? ick! To my surprise, I found that a small piece of fabric placed between the connection before attaching made for a nice snug fit – and the lenses actually aligned quite well. Of course your mileage may vary, but it’s certainly worth a try when other options are cost/time prohibitive.

Update: Commenter Tim Gray offers what sounds like an even better permanent solution –

Buy a cheap UV filter, take out the glass and epoxy the ring in place. suddenly you have real metal threads instead of the garbage plastic they put on video cameras.

Good stuff – thanks Tim!

          1. @Collin..you have yet to use teflon tape…WOW.

Guess it all depends on what you are exposed to…you have taught me so much! Go to your local hardware store and get some. It can be the solution to many fitment problems.

BTW- still enjoying the tune I ‘freecorder-ed’ from your post way back in your beginning here at MAKE. I call it ‘Collin’s Quandry’ to ID it on my crowded desktop.

I would post a link for those uninformed, but I find ALL posts with links are ‘held for approval’ and disappear…

            sorry!

Seems we’re still chasing that bug (tho I haven’t seen it in a while myself)
If you comment with a link, we usually give it a once over to hold off the spammers – but it should post soon enough!

  2. I don’t think ‘nonplussed’ works there; I think you meant you were frustrated or disappointed. I believe to be nonplussed is to be bewildered, perplexed, or baffled.

  3. Yups, I think you’re right. I’d assumed the meaning incorrectly.
Though considering how I discovered the problem (at the counter of the photo place while demoing lenses) – the actual meaning does remain pretty accurate ;)
