After a successful first weekend of quilting by yours truly, I wanted to keep practicing. I tried an interpretation of Susan Beal’s “Cheerful Pot Holders” from her new quilting book. It’s not perfect, but I’m getting better with each try! I was excited to see that many other bloggers have been trying variations of her patterns, too! How often do you take a pattern and make it your own?

Wow, great first potholder, Lish! So happy you like the pattern. I love little projects that you can use tiny scraps for. It makes it so easy to change up dimensions and colors like you did! Would love to see your quilt top :)
Elizabeth Hartman made the Red Cross Bag from the book too, but in yellow and gray with the corduroy balanced with quilting cottons – gorgeous! http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2011/03/5-reasons-to-love-modern-log-cabin-quilting.html
PS: One pattern I love that’s also fun to change the details of is Christine Haynes’ Retro Shift Dress from Chic & Simple Sewing. I’ve made it with a gathered neckline with a button embellishment and added a sash. My friend Diane made a self casing for an elegant little belt for hers and it was such a nice update too.
