As far as project publications go, Fabric-by-Fabric is an amazing book! First of all, it does not skimp, with 416 pages and 101 projects, as well as a stuffed envelope full of paper patterns. The pages are thick and glossy with wonderful photographs and illustrations for every step-by-step project. But beyond aesthetics, the projects in this book, contributed by dozens of designers from all over North America, are super fun and use only one yard of fabric (but of course!).

With wide-ranging projects such as a retro airline bag, party lamp shade, chef’s hat and apron, fabric kite, monster backpack, dining chair slipcover, all kinds of cute girl’s sundresses, and so much more, it’s difficult to choose where to begin. But we’ve made that easy for you with this excerpted Umbrella Redo (PDF below), a perfect project to make before winter truly begins.

  1. I’m already excited! I love buying fabric remnants but full patterns need more that one yard. This is perfect for remnants! I just hope it gives info on where to buy umbrella accessories – can customers buy an umbrella without the fabric, or do we re-use the metal parts of an old one? Thanks!

  2. Oh I love it already… I got this other book one yard wonders too…
and I have to many yard laying around here, waiting for a nice project…
    maybe I am lucky ;-)
    warmest regards

  18. This looks like the perfect book for me! I too often buy just a yard of fabric so I can tell myself I’m being thrifty by not buying more, but then can’t find the right pattern that will let me make something cute while not calling for too much fabric.

  23. Sometimes, all that you have is a yard of great fabric! It can be tricky to make something great out of it (especially something you know will be foolproof!). This books seems like a clever way to solve just such a problem.

  24. Just borrowed the first book from my local library & it was amazing…and now here is book two! Amazing what a crafter, sewer can make out of a yard! I love it & would love to have this book “)

  34. I checked this book out the other day! It is gorgeous-love how the sections are divided. I’d love to try some of the home-dec projects!

  36. I’m new to sewing and feel like some projects from the book would be good for a beginner. They’re so cute and wouldn’t be overwhelming!

  38. Oh my goodness this book sounds perfect! I’m kinda sorta still getting my feet wet in sewing, so small projects are ideal for me right now. (though I doubt I’m quite ready for making my own umbrella just yet!)
